starship or starbase/station?

This is a frequently discussed topic, but I saw a TV show (from another series) today that made me think.

Initially, when you're first out of the Starfleet Academy, you crave excitement and adventure on a starship.

Then, after you've served for awhile on a starship or two, you think you'd like to be able to settle down on a starbase or a spacestation (like DS9) and be able to focus on special projects that appeal to you, without having to go through all the chores you face on a starship.

I had recently reached this point in my Startrek experience.

Lately, though, I've begun to get bored with my (real-life) job, doing pretty much the same thing every day.  And a wise person on the show I saw today said life is always changing, but that's what makes it interesting and exciting.  If you settle in one place too long, you begin to stagnate.

He said that although you might feel daunted by venturing into the unknown (I'm paraphrasing him, here), the greater the challenge you come to face, the greater the reward you will obtain by overcoming it.

Perhaps a Starfleet officer might need to combine both types of experiences in his/her career, right now I am leaning toward staying on a starship.

In one of Kirsten Beyer's books, some of the crew realize that being out there, facing dangers on a starship, is who they are.  That is their life.

Maybe that's a good way to look at things.
