I was just thinking.  Perhaps this has already been explained or discussed elsewhere, but I was thinking it would be a good idea to have a Science officer on the Main Bridge, keeping track (coordinates, scans, info, etc.) of Class-M planets in each of the systems through which the ship is passing.  That way, if your ship experienced an emergency, you would be able to find a safe place to "land"--very quickly!

Also, if you do this, your second Security officer on the Main Bridge could be scanning all the planets, moons, asteroids, etc., within your ship's weapons range, looking for any hostile locals, colonists or invaders.
