I think the disaster was orchestrated by the OSS and British.

If the Nazi's would have been able to put their plan into action ferrying around civilians to and from other countries and the Allies attacked the dirigibles then Nazi Germany could have drawn support from the rest of the world making the Allies out to be murderers.

Not to mention the Nazi's creating a new form of travel that others would have sided with Nazi Germany in producing thus expanding the influence of Nazi Germany across the world.

....glad it didn't happen.
