This may be a long shot but I've been thinking. Peter Wellers character is the big secret and cumberbtach, while important, is the lesser surprise. My theory is this...Peter weller will be Kirks reocurring troublemaker nemesis, in this new universe, Harry Mudd. Cumberbtch will be Norman, a android that served Harry Mudd in the original series and who infiltrated the enterprise as a crew member to take control of it for Harry Mudd.

While certaintly not impossible as the movie isn't out yet....Harry Mudd and 'troublemaker' do not scream DARKNESS to me. So I'm going for a 'not likely' response.

An long shot I know but I'm not sure any past plausible episode link scream Darkness either. In my opinion, the Into Darkness title probably merely iludes to somehting that occurs in this movie.

 To be Honest,That Idea Is Totally ABSURD! But, Weirder Things Have happened; So,We'll see.
