Mr Spock:

Just did a web search and found this - an asteroid just missed us two weeks ago:

Thanks Brianstrom999 - but where are you based now - somewhere safe from these asteroids?

This is not good news, alfamav.

Anyone know what NASA is doing to save us from catastrophe?

NASA seems to have closed down.

The Russians are said to be working on a plan.

Perhaps the Chinese Space Agency or Bruce Willis will save us?

There's a lot of clever people with knowledge and ideas - see 3rd Planetary Defense Conference, April 2013.

But they seem to be held back by bureaucracy and lack of decision making:

This is hopeless. They are getting nowhere. There will be no decision until there's a major asteroid strike, but then it will be too late!

Captain:

As with many inhabited planets, the stability of Vulcan was uncertain for many millennia. Building rapid-response defences against undetectable asteroids can never be 100% effective.

Hence, the VSA researched the Vulcan genome in an effort to record the information for posterity, especially if some catastrophic event destroyed the planet or the population.

For many years, the VSA has sent high-power transmissions into all four quadrants of Space using ultra-high-frequency radio, laser and gamma pulses encoded with our full DNA sequence.

A distant intelligence might detect our on-off signal patterns (similar to your Morse Code) and easily realise it is not a natural phenomenon, such as a pulsar.

Analysis of the encoded signal will reveal our full DNA genome. (Of course, this is not without risk if the intelligence is of a hostile predisposition, but that's a different debate.)

In the process of this genome research, our scientists discovered the way to create DNA memory chips and to build bio-computers. This lead to an understanding of how the Vulcan brain works, and hence to the development of bio-computers with parallel-processing, neural networks.

These super-bio-computers are self-learning, are orders of magnitude faster than silicon-based computers, and can utilise all our sensory techniques, including full visualization.

They have self-developed to be as powerful as the collective brain-power of the Vulcan people.

Our robotic processes can construct and assemble new DNA, and our factories can reproduce this DNA to create humanoid or other life-forms.

We can create life-forms that use historic elements of our DNA that are now switched-off or dormant in our genome.

For instance, some of our amphibious predecessors were able to extract oxygen from water and survive at great depths and pressures.

Others could breathe air with very high oxygen levels which enabled them to grow as large as dinosaurs.

Most of these capabilities are hidden in our genome.

Robotic DNA factories have been developed and constructed for long-term Space journeys on-board our unmanned Spacecraft.

These spacecraft are now en-route to clusters of star systems which contain planets that could support our civilisation.

On reaching a suitable planet, the spacecraft's sensors will analyse the local environment and the computerised robots will build a life-form that is capable of surviving there.

The life-form may need elements of DNA that enable it to breathe in an atmosphere with higher or lower oxygen levels, higher or lower ambient temperature, and higher or lower ambient pressures than on Vulcan.

We are attempting to secure the long-term survival of our species by colonizing planets that we have identified as being potential host planets.

These planets have a reasonable amount of water and oxygen, so we believe they could become our new home.

Our Robotic Spacecraft are called "METEM" - from metempsychosis or "transmigration of the soul" - the Vulcan equivalent of your "Phoenix".

The on-board computers contain all the knowledge and history of the Vulcan people.

Your scientists could spend more money on DNA research, and less money on particle-colliders.

Genome research should be your top priority.

Research on colliders may satisfy your curiosity, but are of no benefit to your long-term survival.

When we realised just how unstable our planet was, the VSA opened a government petition to request more spending on DNA research (and less on particle-colliders) which was signed by millions of Vulcan citizens.

It brought the whole population together in this quest, and reduced the amount of petty arguing, fighting and tribalism which had persisted for centuries - just like a science-fiction storyline.

Commendations EDisConstant.

We are overawed by your thought processes!

In accordance with the VSA's guidelines, we are setting up e-petitions to seek the support of StarTrek.com followers around the world.

We are making applications on e-petition websites to urge governments to take decisive action to increase their spending on DNA research, and beyond.

The US site for e-petitions - now open for new petitions:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/

We have just applied for, and had published, an e-petition to the UK Government:

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/55950

We need similar petitions and signatures from Startrek.com supporters in other countries:

Based on the EDisConstant report of the Vulcan experience, the suggested wording is:

Title: Increase DNA and Genome research funding.

Text: We request an urgent increase in Government spending on DNA and Genome research:

To determine the function of all sections of the Genome.

To transmit this information to all interested parties.

To develop methods for assembling DNA.

To develop bio-computers utilising DNA and neural networks.

To use this research to safeguard the survival of the species.

Technical background information at: http://www.startrek.com/boards-topic/33379452/captain-s-log-21-12-12?page=9

Let's get this moving!   All you regular contributors to the Science &Technology boards, we need your support.   If you are a citizen of a country without a petition, then you can start one.

LL&P.

So let me get this right: Your Earth physics is based upon the idea that an electron has one unit of electrical charge, which is exactly equal and opposite to the charge on a proton, which is almost 2000 times bigger! Furthermore, these charges normally repel like charges, but not when electrons are close together in an atom, nor when protons are close together in an atomic nucleus! You must be crazy!

Good link, alfamav.

Some of the follow-on links show there's some fascinating research going on:

http://openwetware.org/wiki/Church_Lab

Goats with spider DNA so their milk contains the protein for spider's web thread, stronger than steel.

Fluorescent cells from jellyfish.

Cells from Octopus skin that can change colour to match surroundings.

Modified Yeast DNA that produces not alcohol but diesel oil from sugar - the oil is like the waterproofing stuff on apple skins.

Mr Spock, it looks like we're already moving towards the Vulcan solution for survival of the species.

Let's hope it's properly controlled.

But I like the idea of "humans" with leopard skin markings instead of tattoos, bigger eyes with eyesight as good as an eagle and nose & ears as sensitive as a wolf.

Just like Star Trek & Star Wars characters.

Palomar:  Agree on the skin markings DNA for decoration - snakeskin would look good, or purple fluorescent?

May be more useful to have variable eyesight, so perhaps active lenses electronically controlled - from soft-focus to eagle-eyed?

And some sort of electronic control for hearing, as we would be deafened by everyday noise if our ears were too sensitive.

Bet everyone would go for the bigger brain - just like Paul the alien. Useful to have all that Vulcan knowledge hard-wired in from birth?

10-foot baseball players, sprinters as fast as cheetahs - would need to rewrite the Olympic rules?

Resistance to all known diseases, so we don't need inoculations.

Might be safer to ban all the optional human variations - except for survival on an alien planet - and just have robots & androids to have all these acute senses and abilities?

In the meantime, we should speed up the recording of all the DNA variations in the animal kingdom and beam the info into Space and put it on every Space probe.

It may take us a long time to understand what all the DNA does, or is capable of doing.

Yes, on second thoughts, it would be a nightmare if there was a free-for-all with genetically-modified humans.

Better to keep it closely regulated.

But bio-computers sound good.

The old Sci-Fi series Blake's Seven predicted some really advanced computers.

The alien starship Liberator had an on-board computer called ZEN and a portable super-computer called ORAC that could interrogate and control every other computer nearby.

There was also a basic slave computer called - SLAVE.

Just read about Blake's Seven - supposed to be a new series at some time.

I like the computers - especially ORAC (the Oracle?) - the super-computer with attitude - it either knows the answer to every question or gets the answer from another computer nearby.

ZEN and SLAVE also have good personalities.

If we could develop bio- or DNA-computers with this much power, we could get them to analyse the details of human DNA and understand it more quickly.

Apparently, for dogs, there is one gene for size and one gene for colour, so it has been relatively easy to selectively breed for these parameters. Hence the wide diversity of dog breeds.

In humans, however, there are many genes influencing each characteristic, making it very difficult to analyse which one does what, or to predict the outcome of any gene combination.

Seems we're a long way from understanding even a small fraction of it.

Captain:

The Vulcan citizens and the VSA concluded it was too dangerous to exploit all the DNA possibilities, unless it was for the purpose of survival of the species.

It was feasible to create new life-forms with massive brain-power - but the large brain would need too much energy to be viable - it would overheat in a hot environment.

The logical answer is a smaller, finely-tuned humanoid brain, complemented by a super-bio-computer with limitless computing power.

With that combination, the future of mankind should be assured, assuming you have colonised other planets successfully.
