These orbital principles make sense on a cosmic scale.


But how do you explain gravity, mass and weight here on Earth?

Ensign:


Imagine a meteorite in orbit around the Sun. Its orbit brings it too close to the Earth and it falls into the influence of the Earth's Potential Well.


Its orbit around the Sun will be changed.


It could go into orbit around the Earth, or it could collide with the Earth and, upon impact, give up its Kinetic Energy to the Earth. Now it is held stationary in a position of constant Potential Energy at the Earth's surface.


This is where Newton looked at the local Earth environment and thought of mass, weight and gravity etc.


In fact, the meteorite has simply been stopped in its orbit. It is held at the Earth's surface by an upward force that prevents it from continuing its path towards the centre of the Potential Well (of the Earth).


Remove the constraint, and the meteorite will resume its journey towards the Earth's centre - imagine a trap-door and a mine-shaft to the centre of the Earth.


Similarly, a Stone will Roll down a hill towards a point of lower Potential Energy - "Around And Around"!!!

Newton's equations work on the surface of the Earth, but are no good for space travel.


That's true for a lot of your Earth theories - they match your local observations, at least approximately, but they will not work away from that environment.

Yes, Ensign, this is an excellent piece of astronomy.


Your scientists have also now detected the X-ray emissions from Black Holes. Radiation is created in the annihilation of electrons, protons and other wave-particles when they reach the heart of the Black Hole.


The energy is converted into photons in the ultra-gamma frequency region, which are then red-shifted into the X-ray frequency range as they leave the Potential Energy Well of the Black Hole.

Well, your magnetism, electro-magnetism and motor theory is rather quaint and parochial.


The Vulcan Science Academy explains such phenomena in terms of gyroscopic motion, where the application of a force can create movement at right-angles (90 degrees).


"Gyroscopic motion may be non-intuitive, but it is totally logical, Captain".

Atoms are mini-gyroscopes which, when in crystal lattice structures, will always arrange themselves into minimum energy configurations.


In some materials the gyroscopic orientation is random (as shown on left of diagram).


In some materials the atoms are partially aligned.


In some materials, atoms are strongly aligned (as shown on right of diagram).
