>This post also prompted me to register.  Mark, I tried to Google you, but I found a musician and a few others who were in regular business.  I didn't find anything under Mark DeSilva, director.  I also checked out imdb, but I found nothing there, either, so I'm wondering what really makes you qualified to judge a show that had a successful seven seasons and an actor who has a successful career as an actor, director, music composer, and documentary narrator and cast member. Is there anything you've done that we know or can look for to check out?

I do not agree. I mean, you do not have to be a director or an actor yourself to judge someones acting skills. Everyone who is watching a show is also a judge - shows are not made for critics and other actors but for regular people. So if this guy who posted it first is not a director, he can still judge the work the cast has done.

As for me, I just started watching DS9 after the whole TOS, TAS and TNG. My friends from the fandom told me even to skip the first DS9 season as it is considered weak. Well, Some of the episodes where just silly but some of them were great and I am really looking forward to seeing the next seasons.

But what bothers me incredibly is.. Avery Brooks. I really think his acting is poor. And it's not that Sisko is not convinging - it's Brooks who is not convincing as an actor, always shaking and moving his hands, speaking in the same tone over and over. I really hope he gets better in the next seasons. I mean, look how Auberjonois and Visitor act! They're great and it's a pity Brooks is not on their level

The lack of goodness limped along past the first season, IMO. I agree with you on Brooks. The acting was simply not good. Maybe it wouldn't be so noticeable if the acting and writing for other characters on the show hadn't been so competant.

I thought DS9 was boring at first because of the new cast of characters and the setting. After many years of watching TNG and getting used to shipbased proceedures it was really different to watch DS9 which was fringe outpost where various species came to and traded their wares unlike the purely capitilistic free experience of TNG.

DS9 was exceptional in my view just as Enterprise was.

Hopefully Trek will come back and replace NCIS which has become so boring it deserves to be slapped in the head every time an episode airs.

How a can show remain on the air where the premise is always "another dead....."

I agree that Avery Brooks was a horrible actor, especially at first it took me three attempts to watch the series because of him. I do find that later episodes are much improved. He becomes much more tolerable and likable even. My favorite character by far is Quark because he is the only one that keeps up an excellent performance. Odo and Garek are close in this regard as well. Most of the actors do have periods of...blahness... Julian after his genetic superiority came out for example.

The biggest redemption for me is the finale. I have watched every series to completion except TOS. I believe DS9 had the best finale of the all. I didn't feel cheated one bit. It came full circle and left very few unanswered questions. This something you can not say about TNG, VOY or ENT.

Avery Brooks' atrocious acting is very
much on par with William Shatner's.
In fact, it's why I took a liking to Sisko,
because of that Kirk-connection, via the
performances. They're two of a kind ...

Wow really? DS9 is my personal favorite series of Trek. I love them all to be honest but I thought DS9 had the best story and the best captain. I loved a lot of the stand alones, and the Dominion arc, I usually enjoy darker series anyway Sorry you don't care for it

To the OP - sorry that you view DS9 with such unveiled and vitriolic criticsm. It has often been called

"The Thinking Man's Star Trek". I wholeheartedly agree. As much as I have enjoyed all the Star Trek series in one format or another, none of them ever came close to being as interesting in plot development or as interesting in storylines such as The Dominion War.

I agree that the acting could be cringe worthy on occassions especially, in the first and second seasons. However, as the actors began to settle into their characters, so did the overall premise of DS9 improve, as well.

DS9 will always be my favorite ST series as I prefer a story arc over, one shot or two shot episodes, no matter how they are told. In reality, nothing ends so neatly as the one shot stories, whether the endings are good or bad.

I think DS9 had some of the best comedy episodes and absolutely the best battle scenes!  And, I like the way the Cardassians developed--especially toward the end--much more than the way they were portrayed in TNG.

But, the whiney Bajorans were bo-boring! And, what was that bit with the earrings?
