>Another crew in another century, or STAR TREK Academy
is NOT the way to go. There's such a thing as Product
Recognition and average people do not know the spinoffs.
They know TOS - that's STAR TREK to them. Mister Spock,
especially. From now on, it would be absurd to make TREK
spinoffs of any kind, in my opinion. It doesn't make sense.

Another TOS is not going to work for today's audiences. Another exploration-based show, maybe. But not TOS.

Brand recognition? Everyone knows what Star Trek is. We can't just coast off of Mr Spock forever.

I grew up with TOS but I also love the rest with the exception of Voyager and a couple of the Next Gen movies. This isn't some religious twaddle. We'll evolve, grow and change to keep from becoming stale, stagnant and dead. If people can't stand that everything changes and that Star Trek won't always line up with the miserable fanfiction that exists only in their head then they should seek therapy.

Oh! Speaking of Doctor Who:

Peter Davison was my personal favourite!
Partly because he was just a big doofus ...
but, mostly because of Tegan Jovanka!!!
Jesus Marimba ...

omg I can't stand Tegan -- she's the absolute worst! I don't care if she was originally from Melbourne. She'd clearly been living in England for too long and that accent was so fake. Nails on Blackboard!!

There are plenty of stories to be told about everyone in every time period. Is it fair that the one very specific period of time and cast can't be made young again pushed back onto the old fashioned set to play out something close to whatever is in your head?

Maybe. I don't care. The world doesn't stand still for you or anyone else. If you do find the magic machine that alters reality so that it falls into line with your whims let me know. I have to use it to erase Voyager, 3 Next Generation movies and, of course, you.

I do not believe an "Exploration Show" will cut it.
For one thing, Hollywood is incapable of producing
"wonder" in even kids, anymore. It's one CGI orgy
after another on the screen. Exploring pretty pixels
does not sound very promising, I'm afraid.

As for "coasting off Mr. Spock, forever," TOS is the
core of STAR TREK. Everything else branched off of it.
I love, ok? LOVE The Next Generation! And it benefitted
from many things, not the least of which was Roddenberry's
direct, personal involvement ... & syndication. And yes,
it was a hit, in the 8O's. Regular people saying "make it so!"
But only TOS is truly a Pop Icon with lasting cultural impact.
The spin-offs were mainly, you know, for the fans, pretty much ...

2takesfrakes, I know exactly what TOS is. I grew up desperately catching every every episode that i could. I will not sit here and pretend that anyone has the "authority" to determine whether someone is a real fan or that new fans are not as good as old fans. Just because I hate Voyager doesn't mean that it's not Star Trek or that its fans aren't really Star Trek fans.

Star Trek must always try to bring us something new. As I already said, this isn't some religious gibberish. If you feel like there's some "sacred core" or something you should be knocking on people's doors and annoying them with pamphlets. The existence of new and different shows and stories does not diminish my enjoyment of all the old and new Star Trek so what's your problem? Does liking TOS turn most people into miserable, whining narcissists? Am I secretly a super narcissist for liking the new & old Star Trek?

I Am Ultra Narcissus.

After the craptacular ANIMATED SERIES,
which has The Temerity to expect to be
taken SERIOUSLY (ie: equal to live TOS)
I am prepared to endure TOS in ANY form!

And not unlike ServalanFan, I also, am too
well-trained by this franchise to expect
anything but what they feel like giving us.
I love me some J.J. Abrams-styled STAR TREK!

I've been a Trek fan since the original series was on back in the sixties and I personally liked the '09 film and I am looking forward to it's sequel.
I think any franchise that has lasted is going to grow and change especially when new creative forces take over.
Just look at the James Bond films, they've been around longer than Trek and have changed with each new decade. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
There will always be a Star Trek in some form or another. If you don't like it, just wait for the next one, or just go back and watch your DVD's.
