OtakuJo!
It is agreeable to see that you still post here.
Thank you, for agreeing with me, by the way.

Saying of how versatile this stalwart little series is,
I really don't care for the Lucas-styled revamps and
redos of TOS. I totally understand it and this has
nothing to do with keeping the show's "purity" ...
it's just that the new FX really make the remaining
camp elements stand out, like a turd in a punchbowl.

We need a show that can capture the true vibe of Trek, but still be flexible enough to bring a new, more modern spin. Much like the last season of Enterprise, which FINALLY started to deliver on the promise of how we got to TOS from where we are now.

I would rather see new stories and new characters in a new situation. As I would imagine nearly all trekkies agree, there are still a lot of stories yet to be told in the Star Trek universe.

I'm not saying I wouldn't watch a reboot. I'm just saying I wouldn't be able to watch a reboot of TOS without hoping that it would lead to a new spinoff.

For starters, you wont improve upon the original series. Albeit, I know that if you can recapture some of its value you will succeed in introducing it to a new generation. But aren't the films doing that already? So,why not spinoff from the films? Or make a fourth film that has a twist to it and isn't so much about the TOS crew and then spin a TV series off of that.

ServalanFan ... dear ... sweet ... ServalanFan ...
I was all happy to see that you're still posting here!
And THEN, I read your disparaging remarks about
my beloved NEXT GENERATION. I was calm. I smiled.
The hair on the back of my neck ... bristled. But, come on
... admit it: the camp - THAT'S what STAR TREK fans want!
The camp is what made the Classic Series so endearing ...

Is this Troll-Fest still rolling? Damn.

Everything that gets made can only be valid if it matches the standard that I hold in my head and arbitrarily judge things by! It's also okay for me to give free passes to whatever terrible bullshit from previous works if I feel like it.

Damn Abrams! I want another floundering cow like Nemesis, Spock's Brain, Sisko-Jesus & the magic book demons, The entire first season of TNG or the entire run of Voyager!

Original series is really camp! That's one of the things that makes it fun to watch.

I just figure it's The Camp that these die-hards must want,
being so grieviously unsatisfied with the last movie and
the promise of what is to come. What else can it be that
you COULD change, or add, or do differently? Maybe ...
they want PARAMOUNT to make Shatner's Kirk & Company
CGI characters and have the surviving cast voice them
for the next "reboot"? Drop them in, live action ... but, it can't
have cardboard walls & bleached gorilla suits - not anymore!

I mean, how ELSE can you have "your" STAR TREK "back" ... ???

>I don't  think you ever really got it. We could agree on that no doubt. If you could follow what people are writing, we just want things true to form. Doctor Who cahanged for the better becuase the original premise never changed, but the technologies of the times didi making the show better. THAT IS NOT THE POINT!!! Repeat after me- TRUE TO FORN

I think of it as closer to the Wikipedia definition:

"Camp is an aesthetic sensibility that regards something as appealing or humorous because of its ridiculousness to the viewer. The concept is related to kitsch, and things with camp appeal may also be described as being "cheesy""

And this from Merriam-Webster:

"b : a style or mode of personal or creative expression that is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of high and popular culture"

Star Trek is the most awesome SyFy series ever created. I love the original, the movies, it would be nice to see a series with the surviving original cast as retired Star Fleet officers.

Sounds like TOS to me!

Let's not kid ourselves ... as awesome as TOS is, a good 60% of the stuff in that series is kind of ridiculous.

>Ridiculous, cheesy is not that much better

>If you look at Star Trek in general from an outsiders point of view, TOS is probably no more ridiculous than the rest of Star Trek.

>I don't know what you are referring to as particularly cheesy or ridiculous or absurd in TOS. Particular episodes, Shatners acting, the 60s? I probably could give similar examples from the other series.

>

Of course. All of Star Trek has elements of "cheese" in it. Don't suppose that this is a criticism of the original series, as on many occasions the cheesy & campy elements is precisely what makes it as entertaining as it is.

I mean, Trouble with Tribbles (and it's DS9 spinoff) are both wonderful episodes -- and you really cannot deny that they really are the television equivalent of a toasty ham and cheese sandwich! And need I even mention Gorn fights, Sulu fencing, and Spock's Brain?

Roddenberry himself said that his aim was to entertain, "And when your guard is down, slip in a heavy idea or two." And honestly, I think that if Star Trek was all heavy ideas without being cheesy (or campy, or mildly ridiculous) at all, it would be unwatchable.

Another crew in another century, or STAR TREK Academy
is NOT the way to go. There's such a thing as Product
Recognition and average people do not know the spinoffs.
They know TOS - that's STAR TREK to them. Mister Spock,
especially. From now on, it would be absurd to make TREK
spinoffs of any kind, in my opinion. It doesn't make sense.
