I understand the asthetic value of the original story line but re-inventing the series does not intail throwing away the past episodes. The Original Series had quite a few flaws. This would be a chance to bring it up-to-date without covering the original story. Imagine the possibilities. If we want a new series, we need a lot of support from the people who are currently in the age range when we first became addicted. What if the new series was a TOS reboot with this cast? I would be excited to see a new Balance of Terror or Space Seed. Not the original story, of course, but a new story to go with the new cast. As I said before, a new storyline doesn't throw away the original.

No doubt many things had to cahnge and some ideas where hoaky, but chaning the history is like presenting the original never happened. Like an Alternative Reality making the past show impossible. I believe it does throw away the original.

While you acknowledge an Alternate Reality, you clear do not understand it.
An alternate Reality does NOT destroy the ORIGINAL TIME LINE.
It co-exist along side it.

Education here is clearly indicated.
Lets start first by definition:

Alternate:

1
: occurring or succeeding by turns day of emalternate/em sunshine and rain>

2
a: arranged first on one side and then on the other at different levels or points along an axial line — compare href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/opposite">opposite

b: arranged one above or alongside the other

3
: every other : every second

4
: constituting an class="formulaic" href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alternative">alternative

So yes, this newly time line does indeed occur along side the original time line.
This was even mention and acknowledged in the film it self.

Kirk: In the other time line, do I know my father?"
Spock: Yes.

So while you may have beliefs that the original time line was thrown away, in all reality, that statement is completely untrue with no support for the assumption what so ever.

"Abrams haters"? No, we're called Trekkies. Always have been, always will be. If this reboot abomination caused any social divisions, it's the Johnny-come-latelies who should call themselves Abrams lovers and define themselves in relation to that talentless hipster. I will remain attached to the cultural phenomenon I've always loved, both in name and substance.

I've been a trekkie for years, decades even.  And I have no problem at all accepting the work of the "untalented hipster" as star trek.

The beauty of this franchise is its ability to conform to every genre & medium:
cartoons, movies, various TV shows (both episodic and long story arks)
alternate presentations, novels, audio-books, video and board games ...
No matter how they contradict, overlap, reinvent or ignore canon, entirely,
it's all Star Trek in its infinite diversity, in infinite combinations ...

I like the star trek world in general. I like the TNG era the most but thats just me.

The origional movies were different then TOS except it had the same people in it so that kept it tethered to the past show.

TNG was supposed to be different and there were TOS movies coming out during that time as well. So we had 2 different kinda Treks going at once back then.

So now we see a new style of trek which is different and some wish for the old shows and timeline. I miss them too but I'll enjoy the new movies cause its still trek related.

Could a new show in the futre of either timeline survive with the new movies as well? It happened before.

I don' think anyone is an Abhrams hater. Better future? based on distortiuons? Really? Looking at various polls, those who support the changes and bastardizations are losing.

95% want new formats with original plots and timeline intact. Not fake Star Trek Modrizations and changes yes, change in historic facts and plot continuety NO!

It is most illogical.

Yeah what Frakes said.

Honestly:

The original series is what it is -- and the earliest episodes of Star Trek are very entertaining.

However...

Times have changed. (as they tend to do in the course of fifty years.) The simple fact is that, if you really think about it, few people would accept a TOS-style series if it were made today.

I think I speak for most of the people on this site when I say I prefer the "classic" Star Trek. But I do respect the Abrams movie for saving the franchise, even if it is different from what we're used to.

Do you have a source for that statistic?

I would like to see those "various polls" as well.  Are they impressive enough to trump the fact that Abrams make a boat load of money and was a huge success when compared to recent trek tv and movies?

That poll says nothing about the Abrams movie vs. original Trek. Just "same ideals and themes as before" vs. "changes that eradicate the original ideas". We don't have enough of Abrams' movies to tell yet whether it will retain the original themes.
