>Not sure what retailer you work for, but the one I work for, and several I have evaluated received plan-o-grams straight from the vendor. I have worked personally with reps for the retailer I work for, so it is not out of line for reps to work with their product. It depends on the chain on how it is managed.

>And yes, I have had to rearrange entire set ups to suit vendors, higher ups and other powers that be. My retail model may not be the only one, but my experience tells me that vendors have more pull than consumers realize.

thank you as well

Who's being condecending now?

Sorry, wrong again. Try not one, not two, but THREE major chains over vearly 20 years.  And evenflo =|= to toys.  If one of those displays, which are the bane of retail's existence, show up, I can put it where I personally think is best.  Also, nothing is going to stop me from plopping a bin of related items next to it.

So, you're wrong.

And back to my original point.  NuTRek toys didn't sell well with children or adults. The majority of NuTrek that was sold were prop toys.  Even Hallmark has been slow to embrace NuTrek, only adding a Kelven ship and a scene featuring both Spocks to their ornament line and so far no stand alone NuTrek characters.   Which means that very few people are willing to spend money to have a tiny Chris Pine sit on their shelves.  TOS outsells NuTrek, something that makes JJ Abrams unhappy.  So rather than improve the product so people want NuTrek, he tries to squash TOS.

So, according to JJ, the two incarnations cannot live side by side.

you are te only one being condecending? All I'm trying to do is give you some facts about the issue since it seems you are uninformed.

and.....Sorry, but I'm not wrong on this. .....as I and others here have told.If you want to continue to deny that its fine, but you are chosing to remain ignorant of the facts.

as to the rest of your post...............thats an interesting tidbit about the hallmark items, i didt know that so thanks

.as to JJ's stance, I repeat, under the promis he was given he was within his rights, even if it was a dick move

Well when you assume that I'm from a small town or a small chain, that's condecending. Your facts are incorrect.

And the fact remains that because of JJs dick move, it proves that in his eyes, TOS and NuTrek cannot co-exist.

Not sure how that proves that, but ok. Just because he is concerned about his merchandising and promoting his new movie it means that someone we can read his mind and understand his personal beliefs, even though Abrams is on record that if it were not Crawley's "New Voyages" he would not have decided to do a TOS era story.

But surely the point is that he is concerned about his merchandising to the exclusion of all else.

if he can't see the damage such a move can do,even to his own rep, it speaks volumes about his singlemindedness.

this has totally been blown out of proportion by people who have an axe to grind.  Did they suddenly release Lou Feringo merchandise when the new Hulk came out?  Or George Clooney batmen when a new Batman comes out?  of course not.  Anyone can see when you apply this to another franchise it makes no sense at all.  Cbs was riding the coat tales of the publicity for the new trek and used it as an opportunity to release a whole bunch of merchandise they couldn't be bothered before.  Plain and simple.

Nope, it's not plain and simple.

That would be the case IF Star Trek TOS merchandise had not been in production for the past 47 years.  Star Trek  merchandise production has slowed at points, but never stopped.  Hallmark has produced new ornaments every year since 1991.  The Megos were reissued in 2007.  Danbury Mint always has new stuff.  There has been a steady stream of TOS and TNG merchandise.  CBS did not just dust off TOS merchandise and say, "Hey, let's start making TOS stuff again".  They never stopped.   Every Diamond Previews Catalog had new stuff every year. Plates, toys, shirts...you name it.

Not to mention the enormous amount of TOS novels that have been published steadily since the 70s.  The merchandise was already on the market and had been for decades.

Also, have you ever been to a comic book store? There's always a rush on original merchandise and books when a movie comes to theaters.  That's why comic shops stock up on certain TPBs and action figures when a movie is released.

NuTrek merchandise simply could not keep up with the existing market and hence Abrams wish to halt TOS merchandise.

Proof. I ask for proof. At this point, you seem to know so much of Abrams state of mind that I am certain that you wouldn't mind providing me something that I can research and know how you reached this conclusion.

Here's my thing. I've nuTrek merchandise sell out while old Trek sits, and vice versa. I have seen them merchandised together and built by the same companies. The claim that "nuTrek didn't do very well" doesn't set well with me when retailers in the two towns I visit frequently could not keep it in stock. In fact, there are some places that are SOLD OUT of nuTrek merchandise while similar merchandise remains. In fact, one company has redone its line of merchandise that has sold so well.

Now, to me, as a retail manager, its a simple matter of not competing against yourself. Its like putting two of your own stores on the same block-at some point you are dipping in to your own customer base and wasting money trying to outdo yourself. That is how I interpreted Abrams move, not some whiny move to get rid of TOS merchandise. You can interpret maliciousness into his every move, but I see little more than a desire to make money. It says nothing about Abrams belief about TOS and nuTrek existing side by side, his opinion of fans or TOS or his attempt to "ruin Star Trek."

Guess what? GR liked making money too
