To me, this just further confirms that Abrams, “just isn’t that into it.” You know, like the guy who isn’t coming up after the date is over?

I think he views Trek as a means to an end rather than an ongoing passion.

And all directors of Trek have treated it as a passion?

I don't think he was saying that the characters weren't already there in the original series, I think he was just saying that in this particular movie, in this partiular timeline, it is important that the characters are grounded and relatable, like any good characters in a good movie.

It's not just one movie. There was talk of an entire NuTrek revival.  If you're going to usher in and nurture a new series, you have to have passion for the art you're producing, fully understand and respect the previous body of work, which is almost 50 years worth.  It doesn't mean we need "fanboys".  I just don't think Abrams looks as the franchise the right way.  He doesn't seem to see it as something that can be expanded, moved forward, not reworked while worrying about merchandising and squelching the previous incarnations.  The old material can live side by side with the new, like TNG and TOS.

Preferably you'd want someone who falls into both of those categories. The best art combines technical skill with a love of (or at least some feeling towards) what you are doing. That's not to say that Abrams & Orci lack skill or passion -- I'm not one of those who believe that they do -- but it doesn't have to be a matter of choosing between one or the other. Plenty of technically skilled writers, directors and FX technicians are also fanboys (and fanGIRLS!)

It's not just one movie. But, it can exist side-by-side. That has been the point the whole time. Its an alternate timeline, not one that destroys TOS, TNG...so on and so forth.

Also, I think Abrams is trying to bridge the gap between fans and non-fans. Of course, that makes several fans upset, and I get that. I think Abrams is taking the concept of trying for a semi-reboot, where there is a fresh start for new fans, but a connection to old continuity, as well as several nods to several different aspects of Trek lore.

Also, I don't think Abrams was brought on to head the new franchise-honestly, given his current level in Hollywood, he would be an extremely expensive head of a franchise.

I still think that Paramount is testing the waters and seeing if it is worthwhile to put money and effort in to continuing the franchise. Keep in mind, the franchise has continued on in books, fan series, comics, and other media outside of film and TV. So, it is worth their time to test and see what happens. Its good business for them, and their money to spend, so I have no problem letting them test it out.

Tell that to Abrams, who wanted to shut down production of all TOS merchandise.

You know, there could be a sequel, since the ending of STID was basically the origin of Captain American.  Maybe Kirk wilk be Captain Federation?
