Kirk becomes captain?

So I was just thinking about the 2009 movie, when it occured to me. If I remember right, Pike was captured by Nero, on after a long fiasco, Kirk became captain. When Pike returned, he was promoted to admiral, and Kirk got the ship.

Is it just me, or does that make no sense? Pike made him first officer, with Spock captain. So when spock was emotionally broken or whatever, Kirk was ACTING captain. So why, when Spock returned, did Spock not become captain again?

In The Best of Both Worlds, Riker became Captain of the Enterprise, but when Picard came back, he became captain again, and Riker went back to commander. In the movie, Spock left, and Kirk became Captain, but when Spock came back, shouldn't he have been Captain again? But some ensign just stays being captain!

Maybe this is just one of the many things Abrams did without thinking, but it really doesn't make sense to me!

Just bad writing. JJ wrote himself into a corner and had to have Kirk as captain by the end of the movie. He just took the shortest route.

oh good.  No one's discussed this to death yet.

Kirk saved the freaking world.  Why wouldn't they leave him as captain?

All he really did was choose to pursue the Narada rather than regroup at Laurentian. Spock's the one who improvised by capturing Spock Prime's ship, blowing up the drill, luring the Narada away from Earth, and ramming it to create a black hole.

how do you know if this is what kirk planned to do. only kirk knew of prime spock ship from the meld. he knew he had to get it some how, to get the narada away from earth any way possible before they destroyed it. spock ramming the little ship was probably a last ditch effort to destroy it and the red matter so it wouldn't be used against the federation or anyone else. all part of the plan that was drawn up on the chalk board.

I guess it's possible. But keep in mind that Kirk didn't tell his crew about Spock Prime. So he presumably wouldn't have mentioned his ship, and the plan wouldn't really be known to Spock and the crew.

But it's a valid observation. The REAL answer is that the writers just wanted to tie up the bow neatly at the end with Kirk in command. I've even heard people put forth the theory that some time has passed between the Narada incident and when nuKirk takes command of the Enterprise.

Sulu's parking brake mistake saved their lives. Sulu's fencing skills saved Kirk's life. Uhura's translating the Klingon distress call helped Kirk to realize they ship was heading into a trap. AND Spock kicked major tail at the end in the Jellyfish by saving earth proper AND facilitating the takedown of Nero. Hell, even Spock throwing Kirk off the ship turned out to be a smart move!

IMO Spock and Kirk should have been given a ship to command, but that wouldn't be ST. LOL

either one should not have been captain. in the original time line when pike was capt spock wasn't even the first officer. i want to say spock wasn't the first officer when kirk was handed the keys to the enterprise in where no man has gone before but its been a while and i can't remember the episode. this amoung other things in the last movie just made me scratch my head and say whaaaaaaaaaat???? i hope they do better and i'm sticking with khan as a retelling of space seed with this one.

I totallt agree with the statements saying Kirk was made captain to soon in the new movies. Kirk spent time as a midshipmen and LT (about 10 years) before becoming Captain. JJ Abrahms has totally screwed up the timeline as a real fan I refuse to watch his crap anymore. All trekkers unite take a stand.

Likewise.

He created a new timeline. The original one still exists.

Please. "Real fans" would appreciate what Abrams did: he saved the franchise by reinventing it for a new audience.

The first movie was made to attract people back to Trek. Maybe the next one will have more of that "better future" theme.

I'll agree, the graphics are cool. But the story is horrible, as are the characters.

The new timeline was created because 1 ship was destroyed. Kirk's dad died, which apparently make him a punk. But that wouldn't affect everything else. How did Spock become a jerk? Or how did Scotty become an idiot? It doesn't add up. Apparently good characters don't sell anymore, so they need to make them all stupid like characters in a soap opera.

Hahaha.... when something gets thrown in the trash, they're not saving it.  But then again... they say one person's junk is another person's treasure....

How many new people added themselves to our group because of JJ?
