If you watch the trailer and give it more than a passing thought it is pretty obvious that Benedict Cumberbatch is neither Khan nor Mitchell. He is way too pasty white to be Khan. Plus revenge through mass destruction doesn't really fit Khan, while he did use a WMD, it was only as a last desperate lashing out when all was lost. He would want to conquor, certainly, but he would not want to rule over rubble. The fact that CB's toting a gun that looks like the trusty old BFG 9000 from ID, and sliding down a rope to fight the Klingon rules Mitchell out. Why would a self styled god with god like powers need a gun? or a rope? OR waste his time physically confronting a single Klingon?

On the other hand there is Garth of Izar. Garth has a track record or capriciously ordering genocide, willignness to use weapons of mass destruction, and has a real revenge motive in his mind against the Federation. Lastly, Garth is sfficiently meglomaniacal to make Khan say "that guy is nuts!"

As for the "hands on the glass" think about the fact that in TOS Pike was fried by radiation. Spock was loyal to him above and beyond the call, so it makes sense that the two hands were Spock and pike with the view being from the radiation contaminated side of the glass.

Alice Eve with her bob coif and blue uniform looking like so much like Sally Kellerman is a great red herring.

agree on all points and good catch on the 2 people on opposite sides of the glass. however i think JJ make the first trek movie for new fans and i think he's going continue it here. only we know who garth is or anyone for that matter. the same people who think trekkies are nerds will be saying why name a villian garth or what is a garth. i personally think its khan even non trekkers know him from riccardo maltoban. plus i think he's using the batman trilogy formula. they brought back the joker in the second film so who is treks biggest villian? plus the poster looks like a copout of the batman third movie poster. JJ will once again cater to the non trekkers to support this movie.

I think it's someone we haven't seen yet.

It has to be Gary Mitchell. According to the synopsis, we have a character who is both in Starfleet and capable of single-handed immense destruction. Who else but Gary Mitchell? Besides, Alice Eve's hair suggests no one but Dr. Elizabeth Dehner.

I think the top 3 villains it could be are Gary Mitchell, Kahn, or Garth of Izar. Other possibilities could be Trelaine or Charlie-X. Since this is an alternate reatlity Trek, anything is possible. If it's Gary Mitchell, it would seem his revenge would be more directed towards Kirk himself. So Gary attacking Earth directly doesn't fit with me. And he has god like powers, why would he blow stuff up? he can just wink it our of existence. If it's Kahn, I think it's would be the first introduction of Kahn into the 23rd century. He's found, maybe by another starship other than Enterprise. And decides to take revenge on the world that forced him to escape into space. He attempts to take power again.

Garth to me is the most plausable. He went through some traumatic stuff as we all know & in his own demented train of thought, he want's to pulverize Starfleet. If you read the synopsis, it definetly points to someone that is or was part of Starfleet.

Apparently, his name is John Harrison.

Who the hell is John Harrison?!?

I'm thinking Gary Mitchell too.  the girl with the blond bob, the huge gun he's toting- remember the big rifles from "where no man has gone before"?.  I just see little hints everywhere.

Still thinking Mitchell.  The cell in the still photo reminds me of the cell they had Mitchell in, when they were on that planet they were going to leave him on.  He's wearing a Starfleet uniform, doubtful Khan would be.  I still think they leave him on the planet, don't kill him,  and he gets away.  And just because he had god-like powers in the tv show, doesn't mean he has god-like powers in Abrams ST.  Maybe just some good TK and mind control stuff.  I will admit though that the Garth people make a decent case.

I watched Garth's episode last night and it's set IN A DETENTION FACILITY.
Garth is a shapeshifter and can pose as whoever this John Harrison is.  According to non-canon, Garth had bad dealings with the Klingons.  Garth was the epitome of Starfleet captains.  Garth has a stupid name that they would have reason to conceal until the movie opens and this guessing-game gives them cover to do so.
Also, while I REALLY like the switcharoo suggestion (Brilliant!) regarding Captain Pike's radiation poisoning, what if it isn't Pike, but rather Garth, whose descent INTO DARKNESS began after a horrible disfiguring accident.
