Blue Ray and High Definition

What would I be getting if I only had one of the qualities even from older movies. I do favor HD. But it only seems by progression Blue Ray was first. But what does Blue Ray actually do as opposed to HD? I'm really vauge about this. But I believe the STAR TREK FAMILY are well abreast of this. Anybody care to opine I sure would appreaciate it.
