I'm sure this topic has been discussed numerous times before, but I was just thinking about it recently.  Do members of the crew eat their meals in "Ten Forward" (or the lounge on their ship); or are there Officer's Mess Halls and enlisted personnel's mess halls for regular meals, with the lounge just for drinks and desserts?

I can't imagine everyone on the Enterprise's crew, for example, eating a 3- or 5-course meal in Ten Forward.  The place--although large--would be packed all the time!

Of course, individuals could eat in their rooms, if they have replicators.  But, having a meal in the mess would allow people to interact with each other, in a more informal way.

Well, I think it depends on the size of the ship and the capabilities of the ship.  (NX-01 vs NCC-1701E.)

If we take a look at the first ships, they weren't big enough for the captain to have his own office - had to settle for using his quarters.  I think this would necessitate a single location (other than the Captain's Mess) for everyone to use.

But if we take a look at the later ships, like the 1701D with over 1000 people, it would be impossible for a single place (like Ten Forward) to provide as many meals a day as everyone requires (3/day for humans) for everyone.  Thankfully, they have replicators in the quarters, but that makes it hard for people to eat together.  As such, I highly expect multiple locations throughout the ship where people can get together and eat.  (Who knows... maybe even cook real food grown in hydroponics.)

I was thinking that on larger ships, they might have a mess hall--perhaps with the officers' section partitioned-off--where everyone could eat, in kind of a cafeteria-like setting, unless they could also hire waiters.

Then, people could eat their meals there, and perhaps congregate, while Ten Forward would be simply for drinks and desserts, possibly including simple snacks (like chips).
