Just a few days ago, I dreamed of being assigned to a starship, as a working engineer.  However, after reading the first part of David Mack’s book, The Persistence Of Memory, I realize that my reflexes and reactions have become too slow to be an active crewmember of a Starfleet ship.  At 59-1/2 years old, I would probably be more of a liability than an asset to my comrades; they might have to take care of me, rather than resolving the crisis.

I realized that I have started the transition from being a player, strapping on my helmet and charging out onto the field, to becoming one of the enthusiastic fans, cheering on the team from the sidelines.  I am not cyring or moaning about it; I am just leaning against the doorpost, sighing wistfully.

So, if offered a choice between a starship or a starbase assignment, I would now definitely choose the latter.  Ideally, I would prefer an assignment on Jupiter Station, Utopia Planitia (Mars) or a starbase or spacestation, somewhere in the Federation—perhaps even an assignment at the Daystrom Institute, if one was offered.  My mind and spirit still want to travel the stars, but my body is better off in a more stationary mode.

I still am keenly interested in events, ideas and people in Starfleet and the Federation, and I hope to still contribute some good ideas and share the camaraderie with everyone.  But, it is interesting to contemplate how we change, as we move through life.  It will still be fun, as long as one can continue the journey.

Ask yourself this question:  Would my experience benefit the crew more or less than not being in my prime would hinder the crew?
