I was wondering, if there was a new Star Trek series that was about Starfleet Academy, what could they do with it ?

When people watch a Star Trek series, they want to watch the characters in space.

I would love for Chief O'Brien or Redge Barclay to be teaching there but the main characters would be in their early 20's.

A new Red Squad would probablly be in it.

This would be the first Star Trek show with out a Captain or focusing on a Captain and that idea is refreshing.. Besides Deep Space Nine, all of the other Trek shows has taken place on the Bridge for the most part. It was nice watching Deep Space Nine and not seeing Ops all the time.

I am asking, how would a Starfleet Academy Star Trek series work ?

I wholeheartedly agree with you , Sir ! It would make a fantastic Series ! But , Oh No !! The Executives know better , because they've been to Business School !! They know how to make Money , and They know what's best for You ! And That's , JJ Abrams ! Who is now in charge or soon will be in charge ! Or maybe CBS too ?! Have you seen the infantile crap they are shoving down their Networks throat ! I don't think so , now or anytime soon ! The Franchise is in the hands of the Businessmen.. Any decent Story or Continuity is Gone Forever !

the crew of the Valiant weren't exactly the best ensemble (felt like Muppet-Babies in Space) and I get the impression that's how a series about Starfleet Academy would feel. Not saying that nobody could ever pull it off, but it would take a pretty good writing team to attract more than just a teenage audience to such an idea.

I had heard rumors that the producers were kicking around a series about Starfleet Academy.  I think it would have been interesting to see a class starting out as plebes and going through four years of training and then getting their first assignments.

That's the problem you can't have a star trek show without the characters being muppet-babies mixture. I felt the same way about ds9,tng,voy only enterprise was more like a bad drama then a muppet mixture

It would be like Harry Potter, except in San Francisco.

There's a fine line between 'Brightest minds' and 'Mary Sue Wesley Crusher' and frankly, I don't quite trust Star Trek writers with knowing where that line is.

That being said, the idea has potential. If you put it after Voyager, there's a universe of possibilites. I'd like it to follow a group of cadets (Three, maybe four) through their years at the Academy, then onto their first assignment(s.) If done right, I'd watch it.

Well... .those that want to join Starfleet.  Other "brightest" people go to universities, etc. of the time - and not limited to just earth.

And if they were only going after just the "brightest", why would Nog be allowed?

Ha Ha !! Nog is a good example ! Nog's Dad , Rom , was a waiter for Quark , but was always messing around with the power conduits and systems on Deep Space 9 in his spare time . Starfleet Chief , Miles O'Brien , eventually found out and taught him to be his assistant . Rom was a natural engineer .  Rom's son , Nog , had the same abilities . So they may have been virtual slaves and looked stupid , but they were intelligent . Ben Sisko and his son , Jake , tutored him for the Starfleet Entrance Exams !

It will be The Vampire Diaries in starfleet or some other teen drama but if they make it about a education in military school and the future officers, soldiers it will have a pretty solid basis but then again starfleet is not a military organisation and the average soldier, officer is not the grand explorer neither he is the brightest(thats not hitler's SS) person let alone a morale one

I wouldn't be very enthusiastic about an Academy based series, but if it were on a "training vessel" that took final year Academy students out on practical on the job training, and rotated them out each year, then that might work.  The main cast would be regular officers, and each year have a new group of trainees.  This would of course deviate from tyical Star Trek in that they usually stick with the same group for a long time, and even the recurring guest stars tend to stick around for a long time.
