Shouldn't the anti-gravity have gone offline at the jettison of their engine?

You mean the 'gavity plating', don't you? Yeah, but the work-around is, or could be, that the 'pod has a backup battery just for gravity, that can't be tapped for anything else.


Then again, asking technical questions gets you into the land of Treknobabble, which I got very sick of on TNG, DS9, and VGR...
