Is it just me, or when Janeway was giving her advice to 7 or 9 did she ussually seem like a sensitive good friend (more sensititve than with anyone else on the ship)' sometimes like a monther; and every once in a while a "hey, say what" are they trying to imply Janeway might like girls?

Could just be the mothering nature of the female gender.

I think Janeway just felt sorry for a once-human person retrieved from the Borg Collective.  I don't think there was anything else there.

Was just s ham fisted, non too subtle way of trying to recreate the mentoring relationship portrayed by Picard and Wesley in TNG.

7 of 9 was a twist on the "young person learning" character such as Chekov, Wesley, Jake Sisko, Mayweather

regarding Chekov as I understand it, he was only there b/c the Russians were offended by their not having a Russian there (I guess they didn't get the Klingon/Russian metaphor) and the cast and writers mercilessly pocked fun of the Russians through him, I think more than anything because of not liking being forced to add another character because of political pressures; I thought that was mainly what I say when watching him, yes kirk was somewhat tender towards him when dealing with matters of sexuality and stuff, but only when saying "how old are you" "you stay here I'd better handle this" as he did in "Who Morns for Adonis".

I think it started out that way, but the Lesbian community started to read way more into that relationship. I think the writers answered by giving it a sexual undertone in the later episodes.

Wow! Thanks for quoting me JOYOFVGR, made my day!

To be honest, I never picked up on the sexual undertones you mentioned - perhaps I should review a few episodes...any suggestions?

@sdt1701- The Chekov character was created to atract younger fans of the female variety. He was a direct response to Davy Jones of The Monkees. The creation of that character had nothing to do with showing a :young person learning".

As for Mayweather, he may have been young but due to having been born on his family's freighter, had more experience than anyone else on board. Hoshi is a better example of your point.

@JOYOFVGR- I've never picked up that vibe between Janeway and 7. I know people talk about it, just has they talk about Kirk and Spock, but I don't believe there's anything there, other than the power of suggestion and wishful thinking.

Here's what I know: "in an interview one of the big trek execs or something said they had heard that the head of the USSR at the time (pre-Gorbachev) had said "he didn't like that Trek didn't have a Soviet/Russian, was this supposed to be some slight upon the USSR or the Russian people" the exec (or whatever, it Might have been Gene himself, it was so long ago I don't remember) said he suspected "it was just propaganda made for political purposes" paraphrased not quote, but "we were trying to make a show to promote peace, not increase hostilities, so I/we decided it was better to be on the safe side and not upset anyone, and it was clearly upsetting some people, and not the people they were trying to upset" or words to that effect.

Now after they made that decision, "they" (the writers or whatever) could have made just as many jokes about the Russian people by having an old, white haired, washed up retired general always stumbling about and drinking vodka (yea, like they would have allowed that in the 60's), instead of a young guy saying "Sherlock Holmes" "Dracula" "sliced Bread" "Apple pie and hotdogs" oh yes all Russian inventions, and have kirk say "you mean British and American Inventors don't you" and Chekov replying "I don't think so?" and then Spock Correcting him, so in that sense, yes he was made young, but his creation, and very likely his age, were a reaction to that soviet comment, but once the age and/or character was created, I'm sure the bean counters and the focus group people, or whatever they called them back then had their say; but just because you are an exceptional researcher and tracked down what one of them said in a memo, does not mean that was the driving force behind his being young, nor that therefore 7 of 9 was trying to be used in the same capacity.

Now if you'll excuse me my old computer with a letter from a Marvel Exec about Graphic novel writing, which included just that one bit of info I couldn't remember about something that come up; fully started up, a while ago and I promised my publisher 54 panels by tomorrow night; and so I've only written about 7 or 9 (hehehe) so I've got to get back to work.

Maybe warp/green girl is right, b/c about the kirk/spock thing, you have to have a really bad childhood (& not get over it) or have a very rare gene (or perhaps and have a slightly less rare gene) in order to be a male gay, but you get a room full of women drunk with no men around and some might say about 1 out of every 4 might consider experimenting with another 1 out of every 4, so that approximately 7 out of 9 would not; and maybe Warpgirl's idea was that Janeway was saying "I think they misnamed you, I think you should have been named 2 or 9"
