I'm sort of on the fence about it... on one hand the new reboot is what got me interested in Star Trek, But then when I started to watch the Star Trek TV shows I started to realize what it was really all about. I feel like the reboots have changed a lot of it, it's not about seeking out new cultures, accepting others, and striving to do right anymore. Now it's about killing some aliens and sexing Uhura up. Quite disappointing.

Wow... I really don't think that's all the new Trek was about.  In fact I think it displayed the Highest ideas of what Starfleet has always been about.  Vulcan sent a distress call and Starfleet answered with every resource they had available.

That does not sound like a movie about killing aliens to me.

After Kirk and Co. had won, despite all that Nero had done, Kirk offered him aid.  Of course no one, even Kirk, expected him to take it... but the point is... Kirk made the effort.  In the truest Starfleet fashion he made the effort to take this bad situation and try to make something good come out of it.  He offered a hand, to the killer of his father.  I don't know about you but I was damn impressed.

Since the ENT series it was revealed that Vulcans, far from being emotionless, had very deep emotions.  They just controlled them very very well.  In TOS there was a certain sexual tension between Spock and Uhura.  I think Abrams took those two concepts and ran with it.  We know that Spock was not perfect and had a few chinks in his emotional armor.  I felt it made his character more real.  I felt more of a connection to him.

I've been watching Star Trek since TOS was in first run. I grew up on Star Trek and in the brief periods where there was no Trek, I missed it horribly.

I loved the new movie.  Because of rights owned by CBS there were certain things that Paramount could not make use of. A lot of people seem to forget that.  They HAD to change things.

Anything I can think of to put here would most likely get me banned

I did like the new movie, and I am a hard core TOS fan.

My only criticism went to the Spock - Uhura relationship.  I thought it was completely ourt of character,  and I personally never saw tension between them in the episodes.  Uhura flirted with Spock once to my recollection when they talk about Vulcan not having moons.

I always thought Uhura was more inclined to have a crush with Kirk.

I heard there would be three movies. Maybe at the end of the third one, they will fly into an energy barrier or something and merge back into the real universe. The last scene could be the real TOS enterprise flying off into the distance.

So, IMDB has a listing for Star Trek Into Darkness for a 2013 release and it lists Khan in cast.  Any thoughts?

Agree with the cross-rank fratenization which would be wrong even now in the military but........

I don't know why it took me so long to remember this but a major inconsistency in the movie was that the Spock character was about to undertake the Kohlinar training to expel all emotion.  Early on he asks Mom not to see this as a repudiation of her humaness.

Yet he's kissyface with with Uhura in the turbolift, runway, transporter pad etc.

Sorry it took me forever to reply!
WarpGirl9 I can sort of see that now, but it still disappoints me. Too much violence and too much smexing up, it just doesn't seem to be in the Star Trek spirit... if that makes sense

@Nirmanakaya I too hate the Spock-Uhura relationship, it just seems strange doesn't it?

I liked the movie as a stand-alone action film, but I hated it as part of the Star Trek universe.  I just feel it was wrong to institute such a drastic change in the timeline to create an easier backdrop to write creative stories in.  With so many books, television shows and movies written that managed to fit into the storyline, I really don't see why there was a need to change it up.  My suspicion is that at the end of the current trilogy of movies, the original timeline will be restored.  I absolutely hate red matter, the most ridculous plot device in Star Trek history!

He was considering the Kohlinar. Then he changed his mind and joined Starfleet instead. Jump ahead a few years, and he's decided to have a relationship with Uhura.

Khan?

Yay, we get something like "Batman" in Star Trek. That's just great.

It reads we only get the same story told from another director. Just like Batman. So, every 10 years someone new makes three movies and all the same like:

- introduction

- a big enemy: Khan (Joker)

- another one: ??? (Penguin)
