cheaper nuclear fusion?

Nuclear fusion has been produced, using pyroelectric crystals, to accelerate deuteriumions into a metal hydride target also containing deuterium (or tritium) with sufficient kinetic energy, resulting in nuclear fusion.

Piezoelectric crystals produce electricity when heated (perhaps through pressure and mechanical stress).

Could Starfleet use something like this to produce nuclear fusion more cheaply?
