Guinan's advice was too good, especially with people like Ensign Ro and Worf.

There was an episode where the Enterprise became trapped in a sea of two dimensional creatures. This cause Deanna to lose her empathic abilities. She immediately became whiny and useless, saying she couldn't do her job without her abilities. I had never considered it, but since you brought it up, I'd have to say Guinan was indeed a better counselor. She didn't have any sort of empathic abilities, but she was still able to advise everyone, and even the captain trusted her. They should have took Deanna off the ship and made Guinan the new ships counselor, AKA "The Bartender". lol

I rewatched that episode yesterday, which made me think of this question. She turns into a useless bitch, and even talks down to Guinan who tries to help her. Guinan even said, "better hours"

Most of the time I liked Deanna, partly as a character, but mostly cause I thought she was hot. But there were episodes (especially during the first season) where she was really annoying and whiny. That was one of the worst ones.

They both gave good advice, but I think Troi, with the empathy, as well as years of counseling classes at the academy and Betazoid University make her a better counselor over all, but Guinan has a lot of life experience, as well as the ability to detect temporal oddities, so it depends on the situation. Over all, I voted Troi.

I think Guinan was the better "counselor." She always had good advice for people when they really needed it. I think Troi was smart, but her character depended too much on her empathic abilities. She did add a little spice to the show, but I think she knew that too.

Guinan for sure.

As JK1701 pointed out that episode when she lost her "powers" instead of falling back on years of psychological training she must have from going to whatever university plus Starfleet she starts whining about how she can't do anything.

She used her mental abilities as a cruch thus turns out she wasn't good at her job to begin with. Not to mention that Barclay kept relapsing into holodeck fantasy.

If I was on the ship I'd go to the bar and chat with 700 years of life experience for help.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Troi followed the protocols for Starfleet more closely, but that probably limited her capabilities.  Guinan, on the other hand, did her counseling more informally, so she was able to be more creative--as when she helped Worf in the holosuite and helped Dr. Crusher in Sick Bay.

Plus, being able to pour someone a drink--even synthohol--probably didn't hurt.

I don't agree. I find Guinan's advice to be very helpful. I don't think I'm beyond help. Please don't make comments like that.

Both have helped save the ship at least once, I think they are both awesome. And it should be noted that Guinan is one of the people Troi goes to for advice.

I didn't vote because I think both of them are good in giving advice. Guinan focuses on social problems while Troi focuses mainly on psychological problems kind of like Freud lol However Troi has handled a few social problem situations like the time Data asked Troi about whether he should persue a relationship with Lt.D'Sora or not.

Either way, I found it annoying that when they finally had some ideas for the use of a counselor, they brought in a bartender.  They went through an entire season with nothing in that part of her job, the part of her hob that her title referred to, then finaly started working some of those ideas into scripts with someone else.

I wonder how much Counselor Troi relied upon her telepathic/empathic ability, as a Betazoid, and how much she followed the conventional procedures of psychotherapy and psychology.  Was she prevented, or did she feel restricted, in using these abilities in the course of her profession?  Or, did they enhance her professional expertise?

Guinan was an El-Aurian, who are known for their listening skills.

So, each brought their own unique capabilities to the situation.
