Where on Earth (or any other planet) did the name for these come from? Was NCC-1701-D the first ship to have them? Where on the ship are they located in relation to decks? What is their real puropse? I was watching 'the Hunted' in ssn 3 and I think that is the first we see the Jeffries tubes in ST:TNG and it got me to wondering, what are they all about?

They've had them since TOS:

Named after Matt Jefferies who was the art director and production designer.

Wicked cool! Thank you, Fleet Admiral Bam Bam! I didn't know that and I sincerely appreciate it.

I'll admit, I haven't watched TOS in it's entierty... My dad is into all things Star Trek and so I have memories as a child of watching a few episodes here and there. I grew up on ST:TNG and Voyager. I'm not sure that I will watch it... I do enjoy William Shatner (I watched Boston Legal and was upset when the series was cancelled), but I can't get past his often embelished style, for lack of a better term, on this series.

They were named after Matt Jefferies, whom I think was the TOS Art Director.

I think they are a great tool for the Engineering Department, to make repairs.  And, like all ventilation systems, they are ideal for sneaking around the ship.

In one episode, Lieutenant Commander Nella Daren and Picard played their musical instruments together at the intersectionss of Jefferies Tube 25, because the acoustics there were the most perfect ones in the ship.
