Grrrr, TARG MANURE!

Dammit, if I didn't like all you people so much (plus the fact I need a star trek costume really bad anyway)

I would leave. However, that would give the spammer exactly what he/she wants.

Yeah I too saw the could not open socket page, and at first I thought it was just my computer, but then I noticed nobody was posting anything at all anywhere, and I realized it was the boards.

I understand that they have several system to take care of, but this is ridiculous.  We've been having problems for too long now.  And with the lack of communication from the Admins.....

And many of us have offered to help... but the Admins absolutely refuse.

It seems that when any of us offer to help or have suggestions that are intened to help is when Admin seems to think that we are really trying to ruin the board and make them lose their job(s).  :: sigh ::  Are they really that paranoid?  Are they really that scared of us?  Like I have said, most of us really do want to help and make this site the best that it can be!  Only a few trolls want to bring the board down and that seems to be only because the trolls seem to want to show everyone that they are the 'real' power here.

Anyhoo, good to see it back for however long :: crosses fingers ::

Hey, Frustrated

Jobs are hard to come by these days. Would you want to loose your's ?

Maybe they are fed up with all the endless spamming and with posters who only come here to bitch about how poor this place is and how poorly it's being run.

Just saying. How would you feel if you were in their shoes ?

Wow.... so you support admins that aren't doing their jobs?  How about letting someone that wants to work hard and do a good job take their place?

If they'd actually do their jobs, then people would be complaining about how poorly they're doing it, would they?

But even with that information that was given to the Admins, they still blame it on the browser...  (and I have e-mail to prove it.)

And just in case everyone missed it... the Admins finally posted a message that the board is back up: http://www.startrek.com/boards-topic/33377688/startrek-com-board-outage

So if they knew about the problem "several days" ago, why didn't they at least publish some message on the site saying that they knew about the problem and were working on it?  (It would also have been nice for them to send another e-mail to me letting me know that they had indeed actually checked on it and knew it was a system issue and not keep blaming it on my browser.)  [One would think that if they looked at my 10+ years here (14 if you count MSN Star Trek Continuum), they'd know that none of the problems I've informed them about were problems with my computers....]

I don't expect them to be perfect, but I do expect them to address the issues and communicate (especially like they used to do.)  It's been a long time, but it used to be that when we made the admins aware of problem, they'd fix it and then send us back an e-mail thanking us for letting them know - even for something as simple as a typo or a broken link.

Most of here (well, except the trolls and spammers) support Star Trek and want the website to reflect just how important it is to us - we're only trying to help.

If I were Admin or owner of this board/site and this many people were complaining about the glitches and bugs at the board, I would do my best to try and fix the problems.  I would not just toss a band aid at the whole thing and say, "It's fixed!"

I would want to make sure I had a good product ready to gobefore I would brag about how great the new board is.  I would make sure that any problems were addressed and I would not belittle the members for offering help in solving problems.

I would try to communicate with the members and let them know when down time was coming and try to let them know how long it would/could be.  I would be quite determined to remember that without the fans, there would be no StarTrek.com and without the fans there would be no ST message board.  Like Gene Simmons says about KISS fans, "without our fans we are nothing." (sorry if I paraphrased a bit there)

It was asked, "How would you feel if you were in their shoes ?"

I would be ashamed that I had let the fans down and I would do my best to fix the problems that are abundant.  I would make it better and talk with the fans, and listen to them, about what all needs fixed, improved and take care of.

But that is just me

>Just remember - we are all ONLY guests here and this forum is owned by someone else who can run it any way they please. Someone comes into you house and moans and complains and wants you to change things and calls you an idiot or criticises you if you don't comply - what would you do ? I'd tell them to TFTHO and never come back.
And this is all we need to know about you.... you can't tell the different between a private home and a multi-billion dollar franchise where customers (some of us have bought so much Star Trek related stuff, we have to have additional riders on our insurance to cover it) provide feedback.  I know I highly value my customers' feedback - especially when they point out problems.

Looks like the spammers work is still here.  Just locked and move to the back/end of each forum.  Are Admins that desperate for numbers that they're keeping the spammers posts??

Wow.... I thought they actually deleted the posts (I didn't go to the last pages of a forum.)  While it's definitely how I would handle it, at least they're not on the front page.

And I'm not sure if they care about the post count.

They used to delete them.

Why leave the spam up? ... if you're not worried about numbers?

The go through all the trouble of deleting long-time members posts here and leave the spam up?

I think that the confusion is between the posts and the threads.  While I see the spam threads, I can't find any of spam posts in those threads.  Those would be two different records (probably different tables) in the database (threads vs. posts.)

I just looked on the ST:E forum.  Locked threads start on page 3, 13th topic down from top, with most of those locked having the posts removed ( not all of them, mind you, but a fair amount of locked posts have '0' or even '-1' posts )

Out of 135 pages in the ST:E forum, a full 70 pages ( plus one or two on page 64 ) are all those topics made by the spammer.  70 pages!  Now I can see why Admin might want to keep those for future purposes, but why not make an Admin forum that is only available to Admin/Mods and so on.  That way the other forums would not be cluttered up with locked topics that would/could give an inaccurate number of 'activity' on the boards.

One possible reason could be that Admin might 'use' those numbers to show their bosses that this is still an active board and that those 'silly' complaints from members 'users' saying that there are glitches/bugs/problems are unfounded.  High numbers of topics, posts and members ( some members that have been informed that their accounts are no longer active still have their profiles up and their posts & topics up - why do that now, Admin used to remove the member ( sorry, user ) account from the site and delete each and every posts made by said member, sometimes even taking down their topics, too.  So now they keep them up??  Even while that memebr cannot access their account anymore because they are banned 'indefinatlely suspended'.  Again, why keep their profile, posts and topics up now if not to 'keep the numbers up'?

Have to admit that that would be a way to keep your job, esp if the bosses decide to only take their employee's word on it and not really take a good hard look at this board.

High numbers at a message board could mean that everything is honky dory and be seen as a good sign.  That's jsut my take on it.

I don't think they are too concerned about traffic on the message board.  Even in the good old days message board traffic was a miniscule part of traffic on the site as a whole.

I agree that they don't seem concerned about traffic.  But if the higher ups are getting complaints and then ask Admin about them then what is to stop Admin from showing their bosses the numbers and saying, "See?!  There are plenty of people using the site so ther can't be anything wrong with it or with how we're handling things"

I'd dearly love to see one of TPTB make an account here without Admins knowlage and then do something to get banned *cough*, I mean 'indefinatley suspeneded' and try to ask what for so that they can see first hand what others are going through in thrying to deal with Admin here.  Wonder how well that would go over?

Speaking of numbers.... Anyone notice the statistics?  As of this posting:

Total posts: 899634

Total topics: 50579

Total Members: 518131

How in the universe can there be more than ten times more members than topics and less than an average of two posts per person?  (Yea... I'm sure there are a lot of people who create an account but never post.)  Are they including every person that purchases stuff from their store?  Does this number go all the way back to the days of MSN's Star Trek: Continuum while the number of topics/posts are just this current site?

In reality, it really doesn't matter, but because of my background, I'd like to know the context.
