How can they be beating Captain Kirk in the poll on the homepage? Someone please tell me.

Because, IMHO, Kirk is sexist, and really just isn't intimidating. Honestly, if I had a choice, get yelled at by Picard or get yelled at by Kirk, Phsssh, Kirk, duh. I would likley laugh at him. He's just not intimidating.

(Sorry is this offends anyone who is a kirk fan. Not meant that way at all )

Part of it, too, is the time element.  So soon we forget those who pioneered the unknown and previously unexplored.  As with sports, we soon forget who won the championships we were all so caught up with predicting and enthralled with watching.

I used to love watching my favoite TV episodes and movies on DVDs.  But, after awhile--once you know every event, action and line of dialogue--the once-entertaining performances are beginning to lose their luster.  Many of the actors in them have died or retired, and it sadly seems that these favorites are fading into the treasured, but now-distant, past.

The passage of time changes our perceptions, and the river flows forward.  Just think--The Next Generation is celebrating its 25th anniversary.  It seems like they just began yesterday, now they're a classic.  Those viewers who grew up with Voyager probably consider Picard and Sisko old-fashioned and quaint. So it goes.

I would not find Picard intimidating. He'd be more likely to pardon you and let you run all over his ship than to actually do anything to you. kirk would phaser your butt and throw you in the brig, or blast you out of space. Picard talks too much. Not intimidating at all. I don't get it either, Species 5618A

Kirk isn't as intimitating as the others. He's awsome because he in like a space cowboy: he gets into fight and jumps around and gets out of tough situations. I find it stranger that Archer isn't higher. Remember he was the one who tortures people?

Well, Kirk just isn't that intimidating. Remember the scene in "The Troubles With Tribbles" where he told off Scotty and Chekov for brawling with Klingons? He seemed to look on the whole thing as a joke. In the end he let everyone go, and Scotty got off with a mere slap on the wrist. Kirk may have had an intimidating reputation as the most awesome captain in the fleet, but his manner is certainly not intimidating. He's more of a wink-and-a-nudge sort of guy.

Picard, on the other hand, has out-shouted Klingon warriors and demigods. In "The First Duty" he almost makes Wesley wet his pants. He's about eight inches shorter than Worf, but Worf is frequently reduced to a jelly in Picard's presence. I would not want to make him angry.

Sisko is just too wooden.

Picard is so filled with human virtue, so knowledgable, which to me makes him a better captain than anyone at any time, including Kirk. His power to defeat his enemies without using force or atleast always making force a last resort. This puts Picard on top, especially when combined with the rest of his qualities.
