Didn't the female crew of NCC-1701 get to choose what they wanted to wear? I mean I do like the "female" uniform, it's very pretty, but I would not choose to actually wear it--all the time. I'd have chosen to wear the "male" uniform, personally. (If I had a choice.) I just wouldn't feel completely comfortable running around in a dress/miniskirt. It's understandable, right?

Just a sign of the times of when the show was created. Minis were in.

I like what Gene R tried to do in the Cage with his Number One in a unisex uniform. Alas, network execs wanted the women in highly impractical minis. Even TNG had this problem although to a much lesser degree but fortunately that was phased out.

As they said above...in Gene's original version, there were no minis, t was just done to show off Grace Lee Whitney and make the show more marketable.
The movies show that there's a lot of leeway in so far as variants are concerned. You never saw Saavoik in a mini.

We still see the skants in the other Trek series within the Mirror episodes.

We do? I don't remember them in DS9. TNG and VOY never went to the MU, and ENT had the skants, but that's only because they were in a 23rd Century ship, and T'Pol was really the only one in a skant. Could have been preference on her part. One person isn't enough to judge.
Jadzia wears one, but skants seem more her style anyways.
In ST09 however you see women in short-sleeved skants and in full tunic and slacks.

as a woman who hsa spent nearly her entire life peeking up other women's skirts, I would gladly vote for a an all-miniskirt starfleet.
Anything I can think of to put here would most likely get me banned

@ guillemno.meja
Wasn't Jadzia in DS9. And TNG had women wearing skants as well, I believe it was the first season of TNG.

Ha! I agree, that might be a problem. I'd definitely go for the male-issue uniform at least half the time: it's just more practical than tights and a skirt. Especially if I'm in the landing party, or worse, working in a Jeffries tube...
