Janeway's soft heart is one of the things I love most about her  So often women in authority are portrayed as hard, but Janeway was kind and moral as well as tough and no-nonsense. I love how she could be intimidating one moment and yet so vulnerable the next. I love her courage and her dedication to her crew. She always tried to do what was right, even at personal cost, and that's a quality I really admire. She's my favorite character too, with Chakotay a close second. I love how he saw the woman behind the captain's mask and was always looking out for her.

its not that she was annoying, she had a strong voice that made her seem bossy and pushy but I dont think the crew hated her; she was always warm and kind when she needed to be!!

I like Janeway.  She does things her way, for sure, but it is part of being (IMHO) an exemplary captain and also is so far from home.  She doesn't have the nearest starbase to pull into when things.

I always thought Mulgrew sounded like Katherine Hepburn as Queen Eleanor in The Lion in Winter.  Not a bad model for the first woman captain!

Everyone has their own opinion but Star Trek Voyager is what I grew up on and Janeway is amazing. I have watched every series of Star Trek and I like each one for different reasons but Voyager is my favorite.

I think which every Star Trek series you watch first tends to have the most impact. My younger sister grew up on Enterprise and claims it was the best but it didn't even finish.

She wasn't that bad. I thought she actually had some of the best moments. she acted like a mother to the crew, and seemed to be a strong leader.

However, her attitude always kind of annoyed me. Half the time, she was screaming about the prime directive or talking diplomacy; I guess she seemed to starfleet. She made a good admiral.

Hi!

She is all a "role model" for me.

The fact that she was female, she showed a strong leadership and strict protocol adherance. Being understanding and loving to all her crew members (although it seems that all her crew were the main characters) made me admire her the most despite of being tough.

Being soft and diplomatic to other aliens may leave her no choice, being trapped in an unknown quadrant and all you need is a bit of help to get home.

Willing to die for the crew or for the good-isn't it a strong enough character for a woman?

She is sexy, smart and screwed; and in the Myriad books she handles changes very well.  The sexy buys a lot of brownie-points, but the smart backs them up; come for the sexy and stay for the smart.

My only issue with her, as was a friend's too, was her tendency to solve every problem by martyring herself.  Now whether this was rational or driven by her feelings of guilt we will never know; but in Myriad Universe books she handles her bad decisions better with no looking back; or with better acceptance and she makes the best out of an even worse situation.

And it is hard to imagine how better can come out of worse than the Borg.

>She is super annoying! I recently got into star trek because they are all on netflix, and I've watched TOS, TNG, DS9 all 10 movies and now im on voyager season 6.  Janeway is the most annoying person ever. Explanation is because of her soft voice and diplomatic attitude toward every alien life form.  Some aliens they encounter are like klingons, you cannot sit there and use a kitten voice and preach morals and expect them to cooperate so easily.  Which is how it often is whenever they do encounter someone.  I do not know what it is, her small voice when talking diplomatically or how she treats some of the crew besides the bridge officers, like crap.  anyone else feel this way? haha

haha! great post, you touched on reasons, I found her annoying, yes it was def her diplomatic voice in the face of danger, that calm pleading for peace (and also when neelix offered her stuff to eat, her reactions always irritated me lol) im too tired to go into it (1:00 am in UK) but yea she is not my fav captain, but I do love Voyager, so whats a girl to do...

I like Janeway! Her diplomacy is bourn out of need. Being the only Federation ship in the quadrent gave her a heavy load. She had to represent the very best of what the federation stands for as well as get her people home as quickly and safely as possible.

As for her treatment of her crew, I know she lamented on more than one occasion how little she knew of alot of the crew. But she had to keep disipline on baord, again because they were so isolated.

She's my second favorite, right behind Kirk himself!

I think we had a far better Captain Janeway with Kathryn than we would have had with "Nicole".

I didn't see her as mousey one bit.  She was soft with her crew when needed (Kes entering the elogium) and hard when needed (disciplining Tom Paris).
