Star Trek

I was just thinking about Security personnel using phasers aboard ships--especially phaser rifles.  Would they have a protocol that said they couldn't use them in rooms or corridors adjacent to the hull?  After all, shooting a hole in your ship's hull could make your day rather unpleasant!

Does anyone know about such a regulation?

My guess is it's simelar to the alarm a phaser activates when it's used even though on a spaceship.

I'm thinking a phasers or phaser rifles would not do that much serious damage to a the hull unless it was concentrated sustained fire.  Sure it would screw up any LCARS panels or electronics inside the wall but I doubt it would pierce the hull of something designed to stand up to the pressures of space.

In another (non-Star Trek) novel--Coyote, by Allen Steele--the author said the weapons that soldiers on board a starship carried were designed to fire rounds that would not pierce the bulkhead of the ship.  That makes sense to me!

I can't remember where I saw it (I think it was in a tech manual) but I read somewhere that when a phaser is aboard a ship, the computer limits its power output to avoid breaking the windows.

It's never been mentioned in canon though.
