I know this might seem ignorant, but why in the world can't they go past warp 5? Is it just because the Vulcans haven't told them how, or is it something else?

Because warp 1 is too slow for the time period and warp 9 too fast for the period. 5 is a nice happy middle ground for the series. Besides until season 3 they really don't use warp their maximum speed all that much.

Archer's father designed the Warp 5 engine. ENT was in the beginning of warp drive space travel. They had to perfect that before they could go to Warp 9.

Took humans a few decades to figure out computers. Yet in the past ten years, computers have advanced far faster than they had at any other point in their history since they were first created at DARPA.

Keep in mind that warp 1 is the speed of light; warp 5 is 200 times that.

You have to remember that the Vulcan High Command stalled Henry Archer and the scientists at the Warp Five Complex for years.

How about the ship couldn't take the stress AND the engine technology wasn't there yet?

144,265,000,000 miles per hour.

Is that the TOS warp scale?

No, I guess I didn't think of that. I'm not sure what the TOS warp scale is. My understanding is that, like Star Dates, it wasn't really well defined in TOS.

so it acctually took them i think 7 yrs to just get off earth (episode first flight). then for warp 7 it took ten years so almost 20 years to get warp 7.
