Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or MR scanning—and possibly transcranial magnetic stimulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcranial_magnetic_stimulation)--could be used to help develop the interpretive part of the Universal Translator, byseeing  how various areas of the brain of speakers of different languages respond to the same words/images.


Homo erectus or Homo ergaster seems to have been able to speak, having a developed Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area in their brains.
