With glowing reviews and box-office receipts well in excess of $300 million, The Avengers has already solidified its' postion as one of the most popular films of the year, and perhaps one of the best comic-book-to-film adaptations of all time. But how does it stack up against 2008's The Dark Knight, the previous standard-bearer?
I started to wonder about this the other night, when I sat down to watch my DVD copy of TDK in anticipation of the July 20th release of The Dark Knight Rises. Both films are brilliant in their own way, but one thing that struck me as I watched TDK was how unrelentingly grim it seemed compared to The Avengers.
Does anyone else feel the same way?

I'm tired of batman movies. Been far too many. I did see the new spiderman trailer though and thought it looked promising.

Jack Nicholsen is though for me the Joker not TDK reboot person, and declaring Batman as a Ninja lookalike got's the story as far as I know. The Avengers is all about a comic adaptation with something that hasn't been there before, a team up of superheroes in a sequel to Thor, Captain America, Hulk & Iron Man in one movie.

Wow, so few opinions on this topic among such an opinionated group? Come on, kids--it's a simple question. What's your pick for best comic-book adaptation: The Avengers or The Dark Knight, and why?
If someone had asked me this question a year ago, I would've said The Dark Knight, without hesitation, but now I'm not so sure. I still like TDK, and am very much looking forward to the concluding chapter of Christopher Nolan's trilogy later this summer. I appreciate the fact that there are very significant thematic differences between Avengers and TDK. The former deals with an invasion of Earth from outer-space led by a jealous demi-god, while the latter is a brooding meditation on America's War on Terror; heavy stuff indeed! I'm not saying that social commentary doesn't have a place in sci-fi and genre movies, but at some level aren't these types of moves also supposed to be fun?

You'll find few comic book fans around here, my friend, but I think The Avengers will defeat the Dark Knight, TDK got Bane in the movie and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman it dosen't look good to me, but it will make money, the Avengers just had too many good things going for it, like a good Story, characters and action.

I liked both movies A LOT, but I prefer Avengers to Dark Knight. True Dark Knight was AWE-SOME, but I liked Avengers a bit more. True, a dark and grim theme is cool, but sometimes you just want some light-heartedness and comedy.

I agree, spydertrek. The Avengers was fun from beginning to end. While TDK was a good film, it lacked the high spirit of The Avengers.

not a big fan of either... Batman has more history to me, best actors have gone through the halls of batman... like michael keaton, danny devito. Uma Thurman, george clooney, val kilmer...so many and the Avengers movie wasn't what I expected it to be?? Loki kind of came in as an idiot presenting himself, Ï am loki brother of thor...I am a god.. honestly did they really need an introduction? I felt the movie was just for show, the actors werent very good and the only good preformance was the hulk which looked fake. Avengers lacked a good story plot and rushed a lot like most actions movies do now a days...it did not make any sense, if thor and loki were from the same place why couldnt thor stop his own brother? Thor supposibly was a god as well? Where was his god like powers?

I don't like the Dark Knight movies. They make an attempt to be realistic and as a result come across as being absurd. Avengers, on the other hand, tried to look like a live-action comic book, and succeeded brilliantly. Not to mention that taking actors from previous separately-produced movie franchises and putting them into one not only as the same characters they've previously played, but in a context that's in line with the comic books is just awesome.

I haven't seen the Avengers yet (maybe this week), but if it's worse than the Dark Blight, something is very, very wrong. The Dark Blight sucks sh!t-balls out the @$$hole of a New Orleans whino with an advanced case of hemorrhoids, colon cancer and diarrhea. It is by far the worst Batman movie ever. I will never, for the life of me ever be able to understand why it was such a hit.
