TMP came out in `79, and people are still complaining about that as well.

Ahh Dj, I almost forgot you.

Anyway, STXI is a very good film. You know, it wasn't perfect,  point you to this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qDupjWPuIU

Anyway, I watched TREK mainly for the Kirk, Spock and the others. It was the characters I was interested in, not the science. It's all opinion, but I thought the New E was a beauty. Spread the necelles furthur apart and we'd have a winner. She looks better than the original IMO (but on par with the refit and A).

Trek 09 is part of the TREK universe, just now a parrallel one (sorry peeps, it's just as valid as the prime timeline is. Spock primes presence is more than enough to vindicate that). It's a clever way to reboot and keep the original time line alive.

No one questions the science. This movie wasn't made for us hardcore fans, but the general audience. And you know what? They did a great job of keeping a majority of the hardcore entertained. I am more than hapy to say that's Trek.

I will admit I wanna see a more serious Scotty and a more 'I can kick your ass' Kirk (also, a bit more serious). But overall, happy with this film.

Where you honestly happy with the TNG films? Happy with VOY? Even ENT? I wasn't (though I did like the last two seasons of ENT).

Kirk vs Kahn,  do you honestly believe JJ Abrams did justice to Star Trek ? do you want engineering to look like a beer factory, and since when is Starfleet a "peacekeeeping armada" instead of space exploration..The movie shows JJ abrams has no vision for the future like Roddenberry or Rick Berman, Abrams has no new ideas no direction, he wants to bring back Kahn, OO WOW, we love to see Kahn again, but he'll ruin Kahn and turn him into a confused maniac without a purpose just like he did with Nero, Abrams is just an average director who want to fill movie seats, THAT is All, but if this is what YOU like, fine, alot of us don't.

The voice calling young James Kirk about borrowing the red convertible he quickly destroyed, is that Ethan Phillips voice?  Sure sounds like him.  Does anyone know?

Lots of critics out there.  This was a fast paced film, that did homage to the TOS and still kept all the new fans on the edge of their seats.  Not a morality lesson, not a deep space exploration finding new, evil, strange aliens.  But still, it introduced us to some fine actors that are replaceing our beloved TOS crew.... well some better than others.

Generally I liked it very much.  Keeping an open mind, and hoping for more substance in the next movie.  Clever giving us a new time line to explore and change as needed.  Set the characters up fairly good, now lets see some substance.....

do you honestly believe JJ Abrams did justice to Star Trek ?

Not really, but at least he revived the franchise. Hopefully the next one will bear more resemblance to the classic series/movies.

do you want engineering to look like a beer factory

No.

and since when is Starfleet a "peacekeeeping armada" instead of space exploration.

It was a "peacekeeping armada" for the purposes of the movie. And Pike never said that those ships don't explore as well.

The movie shows JJ abrams has no vision for the future like Roddenberry or Rick Berman, Abrams has no new ideas no direction

That's not necessarily true. He made the movie that way to win over modern audiences. Again, maybe the next one will be more Trek-ish.

he wants to bring back Kahn, OO WOW, we love to see Kahn again, but he'll ruin Kahn and turn him into a confused maniac without a purpose just like he did with Nero

We won't know that until we see it. Why not try some optimism for a change?

Abrams is just an average director who want to fill movie seats, THAT is All

All directors want to fill movie seats. That's kind of the whole point of making a movie.

Hard to be optimistc. Instead of being a badass womanizer, Kirk got turned into the guy who loses every fight and gets shot down repeatedly. Instead of the calm collected, logical Vulcan, Spock got turned into an emo that went berserk whenever someone cracked a yo mama joke.

Hard to imagine Khan not being similarly watered down based on the evidence. To say nothing about the lack of imagination or creative writing involved in recycling old Trek villains. There's a difference between optimism and blind optimism. I hope for the best, but so far all the evidence is suggesting the worst.

The good movies first purpose is to tell a compelling story. Filling seats is a symptom of success at that. When filling the seats becomes the primary purpose, it often means the movie itself lacks depth... which surprise ST09 did.

Why not try some optimism for a change?

Because Abrams' movie is depressing if one takes the time to look past its superficial qualities. Optimism, when applied to Abrams' universe, equates more to denialism or tunnel vision.

The part where they were building the Enterprise in the Iowa Cornfields was hilarious!!!  I also laughed when that guy said "The Captains dead and we've got no First Officer to replace him".  Federation Starships have a chain of command streching through the entire crew manifest right down to the last unknown ensign.  If there is no Captain or first officer, then somebody will take over.  Not some stupid kid who has no respect for classic automotive engineering!

Overall, it was an ok movie, but it WAS NOT STAR TREK.  That pretty much sums it up.

Oh right.  It was in a alternate universe.  Give me a break.

I was asked to write a 4 page essay on any subject of my choosing. I wrote about why ST Voyager is by far better than TNG and DS9, and that Voyager is Star Trek at it's best. And you can quote me on that!

do you want engineering to look like a beer factory,

I'm seen worse.

Why?

Or did you find the idea that the original being built in San Fransico just as funny?

The ship seemed to be fully masnned by Cadets.

With Scotty in charge, there's an odd amount of irony that engineering looks like a brewry.

The ship full of cadets, I can give a pass on. Though there were SOME officers on the ship, all of which should have been senior to Kirk when it came to assuming command.

In emergencies, Starfleet has been stated to mobilize the Corps of Cadets(like in Paradise Lost). Really I'm just glad that Enterprise wasn't the only ship around Earth for once.

sure kirk wasn't the most highly ranked.  But he saved the day!  he was the one that figured out the romulans were behind the attack on Vulcan and he was the one that figured out earth was the next target.  He saved earth and the federation.  With the number of people who were killed by the attacks, I'm sure lots of people were promoted in the field before they should have been. Why not kirk who was obviously the only one who figured out what was going on?

I don't have a problem with Kirk getting promoted...just not from Cadet to Captain of the Federation's flagship.

That's my second biggest complaint about the movie, the biggest being the new Enterprise.
