I just started watching the series, and how on Earth (or Deep Space 9) can Odo's combadge work if it is part of him? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

I wonder: If he can make the cloth for his uniform real, then the badge could be worn like anyone else's.

I never really thought it was part of him.I just felt he wore it all the time, and hid it within himself when changing shape

Just saw Past Prologue. He definitely uses it.

Although the combadge wasn't a part of Odo in The Begotten when he was again able to change shape, he took of his clothes as also it to become a eagle.
