Reed lost his communiator on a planet in the episode; The communicator. They go back get captured and later rescued with the little Suliban ship they had captured, who had a cloaking device.

My question is: what happened to the transporter. Two episodes later they transported Trip and Hoshi from a planet, why couldn't they now?

IIRC, there was some kind of technobabble field of the week interfering with the transporter, which necessitated the use of the Suliban podship.

Remember that the transporter was still in its infant stage. Still being developed, tested. Still doubts and uncertainties about it. And, if something goes wrong, strong chance the person won't survive. Two episodes later, they had more confidence in it.

When they did go back to the planet, once in the restaurant, they could locate the communicator with their tricorder. Once located, they could beam the communicator back to the ship without risking any lifes.

Maybe, but it would make more sense.

I think they didn't use it because 1. they didn't want to freak out the inhabitants of the planet more than they already did and 2. they had to retrieve the communicator as well as anything else that was taken from them. I don't think they had any other choice.

Because two people disappearing, not necessarily in front of you, would be so much more unnerving than an invisible ship coming out of the sky, picking up those people, all while being shooting at you with ray guns. Anyway, doesn't the transporter lock on to the signal of a communicator?

It just hit me the other day how topical this episode is.  On Saturdays we go to our favorite bar for lunch.  The number of "communicators" people lost from the night before is amazing!
