Wow, I think it's really awesome how most people here are saying DS9 is their favorite series. Makes me wonder if back in the day when Startrek.com did the what is the best series poll and TNG won, makes me wonder if people voted for TNG who just didn't know better. Because TNG is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but generally most people do say that DS9 is the best series. Yet TNG often seems to steal the spot light as far as run of the mill mainstream fans go.

Are you going by just a handful of message boards conversations when you make that assumption? Because TNG has always had the bigger mainstream appeal between the two, so the polls will often reflect that broadening scope amongst mainstream fans. DS9 has always had a much more selective audience, especially during its airing, but with a hardcore fanbase!

Oh no, I've been a huge Trek fan since I was about 10 and I'm nearly 23 now. I know all about what the general opinion is for each series. I know that TNG is more popular as far as mainstream goes. But to me mainstream is for lack of a better term, full of a it.

Mainstream means that you have both fans and people who are not fans, who simply watch the show here and there, but they aren't actually fans, they haven't taken the time to actually watch each series and really think about it, they always pick TNG because it's pretty much the only series to ever come on tv anymore, at least in the area I'm in, and because they don't know any better.

I'm not bashing TNG at all, I love TNG, but DS9 is my favorite, and for the most part, when you get the true hardcore fans in a room together and really get into some detail about each series, most fans say DS9 is the best. Not every single one, but a good amount of them will.

I got it now. I was just confused by the "people who didn't know better" part. I think I'm pretty much in agreement with what you say. From what I always remember most tv viewers found it too dark and said there were too many aliens walking around. Also that it was difficult to just jump in especially when it became more serialized towards the end.

In part that is true, DS9 is darker, but to me DS9 felt more real. And I understand the jumping in part, but I also dislike the whole jumping in thing. Just because TNG is episodic doesn't mean that it's better to watch random episodes. Each episode may have it's own story to tell, but there's clearly alot of story and character development that continues in nearly every episode when you watch them all in sequence. And the only main arcs DS9 has is the very small 3 episode arc from the Season 2 opener, and then the 6 episode arc in Season 6 and then the 10 episode arc at the end of Season 7. I guess there's also the first few episodes of Season 7 as well. But that's the only thing I didn't like about TOS is that there's almost no story or character development throughout the 3 seasons. The TOS crew doesn't really start having true development until the films, which I think all 6 are very incredible films. But I'm getting off on tangents now.lol
