in this ccase, Kirk standing was a sign that he didnt approve of Harrimans order to call an other ship,
and yes he was uneasy giving the order to get underway...........asking him to give that order was a bit patronizing

Kirk stood BOTH times.First wehen the call csame in, he then sat down
Kirk stoood a 2nd time when Harrimon order a call for asn other ship.
Both are indications that Kirk was tempted to take control.

Kirk pratice far tell did want even simple order Caption begging him to. He seem little interest take command far I could tell. Even case enter Nexus he more gave Caption talk responbility being Caption and try teach him rather try take command. In some ways Kirk avoid take command like not order Scotty modfied main defector dish someone else USS Enterpise B. Must he aviod give orders far I could tell.

Thats because of the order he was asked to give.It was symblic only.It had no life to it.No action, no real result.Nothing great could come from it.
Now look at how he acted once there was some dasnger, ready to give orders, to help, to command.
Sure, he showed respect to the new cap, tried gto teach him a thing or 2, but he still wanted to commasnd, to mske a difference again.

My bet is he wanted to DO something important, as he rambles later on the movie to be abel to MAKE A DIFFERENCE, said in captions because that is about all he was, the man who made a difference, theme that was explored earlier in his carreer:
star trek 3 he says what have I done (after blowing up the Enterprise), Mc Coy answers what you do allways, turn a lost situation into a fighting chance...
one movie earlier, he is the one who pulls the command prefix to screw my adoptive ship.

Kirk know what make differnt not know reckless when trying to do so. He did not even know which Deck was area need be order changes need to the main defector dish . He had ask another office just for location. If made wrong turn it end of USS Enterpise B. He never risk his crew or ship needless. He been doing both in this case. Yes try make differnt but not at risk others. Under your logic risk both ship and the crew so he can try to make differnt not something Kirk does.

Have you even watch the original series???Kirk once put his ship and crew at risk to save Harry Mudds ship.
Putting his ship/crew at risk to save others is what he always does.
and dude, rewatch the scene.
It seem both Kirk and Harriman didnt know where the deflector relay was. When Kirks asked, they both waith for Sulu to give the answer.
And it was Harriman who first said he was going, but Kirk volunteered. So the risk was the same either way.
