I just think they are best friends. And the quote with Julian asking O'Brien wheteher of not he loves him  does not mean they have sexual feelings for eachother. There are different types of love than romantic or sexual.

I, too, believe, that Julian and Miles were good friends as well as StarFleet officers who faced the Dominion together, that kind of situation creates a special bond between people, imho. However, the dialogue is fun.

I've seen Bashir/O'Brien slash. I don't read it very often and I don't write it either. They are my absolute favourite pairing in Star Trek, but I think like others that they are very good friends. O'Brien does "love" Bashir, and vice-versa -- but only in a "Love Ya Mate" kind of way. Nothing romantic about it.

Certainly Bashir teases O'Brien a lot about his stoic attitude to their friendship, and those moments are wonderful because they make me laugh. But I really think they are just that, very close best mates. That's about the sum of it.

The writers certainly seemed to play aroud the ideal, didn't they.  They were probably aware of what some of the fans were thinking and decide to have a good laugh with it.  Either way, the interaction between the two of them was really well scripted.

Thinking in universe, maybe the sexual-mores of the 24th century are a bit more flexible or relaxed than the ones of our time?  While the characters being so close might get a snicker or a joke about from the other characters. In reality it's not reall a big deal for most people.

marshall8472, you've managed to distort the subtext between Bashir and O'Brien to such an extent that it rivals the Federal Reserve's distortion of both money and the economy. Bashir dreamed of Dax. O'Brien dreamed of Keiko. O'Brien was so into women that he even had feelings for Kira, and those two were light years apart in their beliefs: They're profits! No-they're wormhole aliens!

Haha, I have to admit, if there was anything "bi-curious" going on with Bashir, I thought it was for Garak.  Although, Miles and Bashir have a glorious bromance going on.  XD

These questions never occur to me.

I would say no. I have been very close friends with men and women I have served with with sex never entering the picture. Remeber, onboard a ship (or station) you live and work with the same people and see them every day. You spend your off-duty hours around them. When your around people that much over the course of several years, you either can't stand them or you become very good friends. It's inevitible. Especially with a crew that small. Throw in the fact that they are in life and death situations on a regular basis and it is intensified.

Look at the military personnel today who are serving in Afghanistan. When they get injured, they do everything they can to get back to their unit. Why? It's not because they love fighting, it's because their buddys are back there and they don't want to let them down. Some of the guys that I served with knew me better than my wife did. It's a bond you just can't understand if you've never experianced it.

PS, if they were in the modern military, Chief and Doc would be in trouble for fraternisation.

[quote]

Episode "Explorers"

O'BRIEN: Do you know what I think?
BASHIR: What?
O'BRIEN: I think she's in love with you.
BASHIR: I don't think so.
O'BRIEN: It's the only explanation. Unless, unless she really ignored you because she can't stand you.
BASHIR: Isn't there some explanation in between?
O'BRIEN: Well, you're not an in-between kind of guy.
BASHIR: What do you mean?
O'BRIEN: Well, people either love you or hate you.
BASHIR: Really?
O'BRIEN: I hated you when we first met.
BASHIR: I remember.
O'BRIEN: But now.
BASHIR: But now?
O'BRIEN: Well, now I don't.
BASHIR: That means a lot to me, Chief. It really does.
O'BRIEN: Really. Now that is from the heart. I really do, not hate you anymore. Hey, do you know what I think? If you want to know why she ignored you, you have got to confront her.

This doesn't count, they were drunk on whiskey. And "real" whiskey too, not that synthahol stuff.

Hell, I've kissed another man while I was drunk. It doesn't make me bi or gay. It meant I was drunk and wanted to win the bet. Which I did.

^ I think what that scene really showed was a very close friendship -- O'Brien being the practical kind of man that he is, he had some trouble expressing that entirely.
