I love that epsiode. And while it is not the real Starfleet way, it nonetheless holds true. What's the point of trying to negotiatie with someone who's unreasonable and has no interest in negotiations? There is absolutely no logic in it. It is futile.

'Impossible' is a word that humans use far too often.

In ENT "Rise", Trip tries to enlist the help of a beligerent Arkonian. The Arkonian resists with a passion, and even pretends to cooperate before trying to kill him. Even after Trip gets the upper hand, he persists in trying to get the Arkonian to cooperate rather than going "you're more trouble than you're worth" and shooting him. The Arkonian eventually goes along with him, and the two survive until Enterprise rescues them.

I think that's a pretty good precedent. You never know when diplomacy could still work.
