What does it stand for in the trek universe.....???? Being a former sailor with the US Navy, I'm attuned to the various naval terms and acronyms. The USS in my navy stould for "United States Ship". If any one can explain this I would most certainly appreciate it.....Thx, Canna

You may have answered it...but instead of space ship...probably star ship.....United Star Ship...!! Thank you

According to MA, it was called "United Star Ship" in TOS "The Squire of Gothos" and "Court Martial". It didn't go into detail, and I haven't seen those episodes, so can't comment further.

It always looked too much like the US Navy designations, to me. I thought it should have been something like "United Federation Ship" (UFS) or "United Federation of Planets Ship" (UFPS).

It may sound dumb, but it's canon and it does make sense.

Yeah, FSS would've been better but it's really too late to change it now. Irony points for ships like the USS Yamato though.

It seems I recall Kirk using the phrase "United Space Ship Enterprise" in an episode of the original series. I could be mistaken. But, that would make sense if you think about it. We are the United States, a united group of individual states. So, "United Space", or even "United Star" ship would make sense because it belongs to a large united group of star systems.

Ahh, Kirk, my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb which tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It's very cold....in space.
