I think that's one of those things everyone thinks is true about Vulcans but really they're misinformed. Like emotions. People think Vulcans don't have emotions, but actually they do and just supress them to a great degree (even those who have completed Kolinar have them, they've just managed to supress them completely). I don't think it's so much that "Vulcans don't lie" as it is "Vulcans only lie when there's a logical reason for doing so." Vulcans don't need to strictly lie either; they could simply withold information, not give all the answers, or imply something and people assume it's true.

Well it's like "Klingons do not bluff." If false, it is actually a very clever example of lying.

Think about that for a moment.

Vulcans don't lie they just happen to omit certain truthful type points in their statements, maybe.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Vulcans do lie. Just take the example of Tuvok who infiltrated the Maquis. How could he do that without lying ALL the time?

Or in Enterprise where the Vulcans had a listening post in a monastery, while it was against a signed treaty with the Andorians.

Absolutely. Omission is still a lie. They willfully withhold the truth. A lot. Also, to tack onto the comment about Vulcans and emotions, that's BS too. Almost every Vulcan in canon behaved in emotionally driven ways.

Vulcans prefer not to lie.  But, don't we all tell falsehoods from time to time, even if unintentionally?

It's not that they ar incapable of lieing but more that they are unwilling to lie.  Case in point:  In the latest movie Spock explains the difference to his younger self.

It is a cultural thing with Vulcans, not to lie.

When Spock says "I am a Vulcan. I cannot tell a lie".  He means he WON'T tell a lie because he is a Vulcan, not that he is incapable of doing it.

It's the same as when Vulcans say they "have no emotions", when Vulcans do.  They had to suppress something, didn't they?  They were violent at one time, weren't they?  They have to go through Kholinar to "purge all emotions" so there have to be emotions in them to purge, right?

Kirk understands Vulcans.  When Spock says he cannot lie, Kirk says "You don't have to", acknowledging right here that he knows Spock can, and he is telling him he doesn't have to.  Then Kirk asks him to exaggerate, which Spock has done before.

If no one asks him, "Are you a Starfleet officer in disguise?" then he doesn't need to lie. He just doesn't tell them everything. It's their fault for not asking the right questions.

I mean, am I lying by not telling everyone I meet how old I am, or where I was born, or what kind of toothpaste I use? That's withholding the truth, isn't it?

Vulcans are known for their high degree of honesty. They are extremely reluctant to tell a lie, and indeed it is said that "Vulcans cannot lie". However, they will do so for what they perceive as logical reasons, though they rarely refer to their dishonesty as "lying." from the Star Trek Wiki.
