It should have been done around the 4th season, the Crew of Voyager is accidentally transported to another Dimension where they Discover that they and their Ship and crew, and the Entire "Star Trek" Universe is actually a HUGE  Sci-Fi Television Franchise being watched Worldwide by Billions of People and that they are being Watched in the 20th Century Earth, this changes the way they viewed themselves

That would be awesome. Could Kate Mulgrew carry it off as well as Michael Shanks or Richard Dean Anderson?????? Hmmmmm...

There actually was a vaguely similar episode in the works around season 3. Here's the summary on Memory Alpha:

About two years before the release of Galaxy Quest [that would be about 1997], Jack Treviño and Toni Marberry pitched this story where the crew came upon a planet that had been observing their lives on Voyager for the last three years, and where everyone was dressed as members of the crew. As such, the crew are forced to see themselves through alien eyes. The writers felt that the fans would not accept the show having fun at their expense.

The writers were stupid. I would have loved that episode.

Anyway, they did something similar in DS9. Sisko had a dream/vision in which he was a black writer in the fifties, writing the stories of DS9.

DS9 RULES!!!!!

I really don't see why that would make a good episode it's not something I'd be interested in. Even if they were considering it I'm glad they didn't do it because I wouldn't have watched it. Just my opinion. I mean I liked it when they put humor in Star Trek episodes but that's not an episode I'd care to see.
