Does anyone know the background on that piece of jewelry?  Was it simply a ring De Kelley wore or was it written in to be character specific to McCoy?

I assume it was the actors seeing as it was never mentioned in the series or films

Read From Sawdust to Stardust that pinky ring belonged to Deforest Kelley's mother I thought it was a sweet touch. He never would take it off TV show or no.

From everything I've read abt him over the last 30+ yrs, that sounds like vintage DeForest Kelley.  Thanks so much for the information!

It just added to his overall character, too. From all accounts, DeForest Kelley was a true gentleman in every respect of the word.

No problem, I reccomend highly that bio of him it was the best one from the original cast. Followed by George Takei's and Walter Koenig's
