There are superficial similarities in that both can "melt", both can change their shape, and both essentially use the same "morph" FX that was popular in the early '90s. (And still is). A lot of these essentially come down to two things:

1. They were using the same type of computer FX (developed during the late '80s in movies such as Lucas/Howard's Willow) and

2. The shapeshifter trope is old as the hills.

So it is not a "rip-off" more than it is a matter of two characters -- both coming from the same mythic tradition and represented by the same technological means.

can we all agree that when the female changeling suggested to Odo that he can spend a day as a cloud, that shouldn't be canon.  That is to say, as a matter of Star Trek canon the changelings cannot morph themselves into gas or vapor, and that changeling's suggestion that they could was simply exaggeration or a boast, kind of like when a human says, I could eat a horse.  It's not really true, she was just making a point.

It would be nonsensical for a changeling to be able to transform into a gas.  The molecules don't touch each other.  Every separate molecule would return to the liquid state, just like when something is cut from a changeling.

So, can we agree to that?  Considering the passion of star trek fans, I can't believe I"m the first person to brign this up.  If anybody knows if this issue has been addressed, let me know.

>In episode "Vortex" odo turned into a glass that Rom carried to Quark with some other glasses.  In that same episode they said Odo was heavy.  If that's true how could Rom lift him as a glass?  I think I brought this up before it was suggested that he could push some of his mass into subspace or something.  Maybe he pushes all but a few molecules into subspace to produce a gas-like form.

>

That is what I referred to previously, about Odo becoming a glass that was very easily carried on a tray.  Also, in Emissary, he turned into a bag for the Cardassians to carry their winnings back to their ship so he could then sabotage their sensors.  The idea of pushing molecules into subspace seems difficult to accept, and would seem another thing to compare to the difficulty he has forming a face when he can do so many other things that would seem to be much more difficult, but there is definitely an issue with his weight.

>When they showed Odo's feet as he was finished morphing that's when I thought of the T-1000 ripoff.  They did the same feet shot in the terminator 2 movie. Otherwise I might have regarded the similarities as coincidences too.

>

It may not be entirely a co-incidence, but it's not a rip-off either. More like a trope or repeated representation.

If that's what you think love is, you clearly don't know the first thing about it.

Q is the most nonsensical character ever.

He's for all practical purposes a god, and yet he cares about what humans think of him, and even about seducing some of them?  That's about as likely as humans caring what the ants think of them and maybe trying to seduce one particular ant.

Actually the most non-sensical characters ever created for Star Trek were Kes and and Harry Kim.  I'll even throw in the Doctor too.  The concept of kes was so badly conceived, she had to be written off the show....The Doctor was so badly conceived that he had to be given a Mobile Emitter!  And Harry was just a throwaway character start to finish.

What? Joe the EMH was awesome! He got developed really well throughout the show, almost as well as Seven of Nine.

Kes was just another telepathic/telekinetic alien. Nothing really interesting there.

Harry Kim wasn't really nonsensical, but I agree he was wasted in VOY. Almost as bad as Travis Mayweather was in ENT.
