I would say the real reason why we always see the ships the right way up, is to not loose the viewers, or audience. If e.g. alien beings or alien worlds are too alien, then that could loose the audience. A lot of people can't easily comprehend the differences between being out in space and on earth, or flying in the atmosphere. So, not easily comprehend 3-D environment, no up and down, etc.

I would say that people are more able to comprehend the idea of directions in space more easily than you give them credit for.


But from a production standpoint, having a specifically designated "UP" direction is also easier to do with models.
