alright, the board I made asking if Sisko was the worst didn't fly well with my fellow Trekkies, so here's a place where you can say who you think it is, without getting mad at me, as i am not going to say who I think is worse.

That stupid idiot from the begining of Generations. How did such an incompitent, indecisive, incapable fool ever get command of a star ship?

Or maybe his balls weren't getting installed till next tuesday....

To Pluto and Back I think...... I don't Think any Commanding officer is the Weakest they all have thire own strengths and weeknesses...

He could however have handled himself a lot better as a commanding officer, incomplete ship or no. Granted, he was inexperienced too...

But I agree I don't think either of the main players are particularly "weak". There were a few one episode / one scene officers that were meant to be shown at their worst, but often (as with Harriman) we didn't really see enough of them to generalise.

I would say perhaps that Archer has the least gravitas of the main five, but whether that makes him weakest is a matter of interpretation.

He could certainly have been more decisive in his handling of the situation -- He had knowledge of what resources they did have, and for example if he had told Kirk, "All right this is what we have available to us, and this is what we don't. What do you suggest?" then all of Kirk's initial suggestions would not have been so ineffective. He may have been an inexperienced captain, but almost certainly he must have had some Starfleet experience in the lower ranks that he could have drawn on. There were a lot of ways that he could have handled himself better, even with few resources in an emergency.

Harriman in Generations was definetly the weakest link, but he had to be to make Kirk shine that much more. Plus he was overcome with hero worship. Still, the commander of the Enterprise should have been a great deal more than Harriman appeared to be. The desk-bound, paper pusher in the "Deadly Years" was the biggest moron of them all. Although I think the captain of the mining shuttle in "Final Mission runs a close second. And Captain Stiles in TSFS is just an swaggering, over-bearing dictator with delusions of god-hood. He probably didn't make it past his first landing party which is why Sulu is able to take command such a short time later.

I always got the impression that Harriman had friends in high places that pulled the strings to get him the big chair before he was ready. He certainly didn't seem ready to take on the ship with the name Enterprise. Were there any novels featuring Harriman set after his epic fail in Generations?

I've got to agree that Harriman was a horrible captain.  How did he become captain of the Enterprise?  I though the Federation was beyond nepotism, but I guess not.  A runner up for worst weakest commander would be Capt. Ransom from Voyager.  Talk about disregard for not only the Prime Directive, but for humanity itself.

Harriman of the Enterprise-B (Generations), Stiles of the Excelsior (Star Trek III), Esteban of the Grissom (also Star Trek III!), Ron Tracey of the Exeter (The Omega Glory).

Luckily for Starfleet, those buffoons are the exception to the rule.

I thought about him, but wouldn't describe him as 'weak' as he's a strong character, just very misguided

Maybe stating the obvious but I think a lot of those were meant to see mildly incompetent too.

Actually I've figured out my answer: Tim Watters of the Valiant.
