Her Borg designation was "Seven of Nine, tertiary adjunct of Unimatrix 01".

Because they never gave her a real name.  Just another way they painted the character into a corner.

Her real name was Annika Hansen, but she was used to her Borg designation since she was referred to that a lot longer.

Think of it like this: She was born "Mary" then some people kidnapped her as a child and called her "Sally" the rest of her life till she realized she was kidnapped and learned her name. However, she had been called "Sally" for so long it is all she really knows. Maybe eventually, with the help of her Aunt who was on Earth she will get used to being called by her true given name.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Actually as "Admiral" says above -- you are incorrect; she did have a human name but was far more accustomed to her Borg designation.

It's Annika Hansen by the way.

And she liked to be called Seven or Seven of Nine better than Annika. The only person who called her that was her aunt (and in books, if anyone calls her Annika, she gets very upset)

Okay, so she had a "real" name.  Whatever.  But the show never used it which ended up being just another way to alienate the character from the audience.

I do remember there was a 3 of 9 in one episode... which one was it???

Seven was like duplicated and this episode was (i think so) about the doc and a holo roman?!

Ok, and they had to say that in "Scorpion" this about the scene:

Janeway and Tuvok on the Borg Cube - the one Borg who pulled Janeway down was 8 of 9 - i was reading about this many years ago!!!

Seven was, like OtakuJo said the seventh in a cube of nine borg drones.

The show did use it. She rejected it's use because she was uncomfortable with it due to some under lying resentment towards her parents.

And who says she was alienated from the audience? With her struggle to regain her humanity while still trying to hold on to some part of her ....borgness, for lack of a better word, she was one of the more engaging characters of the series.

Are you watching the same show the rest of us are watching?
