Why do women buy a weeding dress, only to wear it once. While men rent a tux and can wear them more than once?

Because they want to have it as a momentum of the day they got married.

I don't understand at all why people dress up at other times(or do fanboys only dress up for conventions) Don't get me wrong I'm not judging. I see some outfits made by fellow Trekkies and I know a lot of time and effort went into some of these costumes( and the costumes of fanboys in general) If you wear a Trek uniform or any costume at all please tell me why. Help me understand. |
Okay - so we're talking about dressing up in a Trek costume?
How is that different than wearing a football jersey to go to a football game?

I don't know if it is any different. Personally when I go to a hockey game I don't wear a jersey. I do have a Team Canada jersey but I wear it out of a sence of national pride. One could say the difference is that a hockey team or a football team is a real thing. The people playing the game are not pretending. They are actually doing what we see them doing. Star Trek is not real. The people are pretending. They are not doing what we see them doing. I'm not sure it's a fair comparison. |
I don't look at it as "pretending" .... it's identifying them as a fan. To me, it's no different than wearing a sports jersey or a hat with the team's logo.

Star Trek is as real as you make it. It's meant to bring hope to a world (back in the 60's) in the midst of 'the establishment'. We CAN do more than what is expected. To dream, to invent, to - to - to boldly go!
Some people may keep it in their minds but until action is taken - it just stays there in the mind. If someone didn't believe in the possibilities - we wouldn't have cell phones today. More is being invented today and not just out of necessity (sp?) but of the hope to go where we've never gone before even if it's just out of our house -- to another state - to another nation - maybe even beyond our world.
I have created several uniforms that are quite earth bound and not looking loke TOS, TNG or the others. But when one adds at least a communicator badge - it's a Star Trek uniform!
Like national pride. This is Trek Pride. We believe!

How much "momentum" is required for "weeding".
It's no big secret. You could ask,"Why do sports fans dress up? Why do they wear jerses from their favorite teams?"
The answers are the same. Because they want to.

Yes, we have hope. Star Trek is one man's vision of mankind the way we ought to be, not as we are. In the time when Sci-=Fi created many posiblities of man's future, they all had one thing in common: They were dark signs of dark times. Only Roddenberry had the vidion of a bright and noble future for mankind. This makes Star Trek a symbol of hope. With that, I wear my uniform with the same pride and sense of hope.

I was talking about women buying and wearing wedding dresess as a memory token since it is a special moment in their life and not weeding dresses. Is there really such thing as a weeding dress?
Just like any sports fan would dress up for their favorite team because they like it and is a memory token for them to remember that their team won or they were actaully there in the stadium or at a bar cheering on for their team.

Its called integrity, i thought you knew this already. When we act in a short drama, does it have more influnce on the character if he plays the role in proper attire? What is real? Can the brain tell the difference between fiction or reality?

It's an interesting question because the fans didn't always do that. I attended the second and third conventions in the early days at NYC. Some people brought costumes (often home made and very good) and held them for the 'costume call' that ended one of the nights. The rest of the time people went to dealers rooms, listened to speakers, watched reels, and talked to other fans - it was magical. The costume call was great fun - it was the icing on the cake - later is seemed to become the cake.
I think in the early days people were just so glad to have any Trek activities inthe dark days after TOS was cancelled and before any other series or movies were even being thought of.
I can only think its an even deeper immersion or identification with the Trek universe.
