We know he was captain of the Stargazzer for about 22 years ending around the year 2355

We also knmow he took command of the Enterprise D around the year 2364

What did he do in those aslmost 10 years?

Good question.  His bio (http://www.startrek.com/database_article/picard-jean-luc) doesn't have anything.

The Lost Era book The Buried Age trys to fill in some gaps.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Some books indicate he taught at a university on Alpha Centauri, don't they?

I never thought about that....what WOULD Picard do in those ten years? Must have been stressful since he lost his hair.

We saw him with hair in that flashback were he brought home Jack Crusher's body after all.

The Buried Age is a pretty good book that fills in many gaps -- and also offers some background of Data and Troi, if you're interested. It's not technically canon, but the writer definitely knew his stuff. It was very "hard" science fiction, though, so don't expect a lot of action.

No reason to believe that the real version of how Picard broke the news wasn't the same.

True, but that was a pretty big moment for both characters, meaning they'd be rather well remembered. I know I remember significant event in my life pretty well.

I have found that the big moments are more then often MISS-remembered by all involved. At least when it comes to small details like hair.

Why does he have an English accent if he's suppose to be French?
