I've been watching TOS for a couple day's finally picked it up on Blu-ray. But something that has bothered me my whole life watching the show is the food. It's so stupid. Why do they always eat Rainbow colored blocks? I hate it.

I think the blocks are synthetic, and are replicated to taste exactly like the food the person wanted. So, if someone wanted egg and chips, their block would taste like egg/chips. (This doesnt explain though, why we see a genuine bowl of chicken soup, in `Tomorrow is Yesterday'). By the time of ST:TNG, technology had advanced to the point where the replicated food not only tasted, but looked like the actual food as well.  As far as the production side of the show is concerned, the producers decided on the coloured blocks because they look strange and very different from our food. One thing about the show that has always puzzled me is why the Enterprise, when in orbit around a Strange New World, is always tilted to the left, yet on board the ship, everything/one is level.

It's obviously supposed to be "futuristic." Come on. You have to give them credit for the small budget that they had.

Going through all that is "Star Trek" for the first time. Bear with me folks.

there were coloured bricks when the alien that drives people crazy was aboard in a box too.

and a chicken salad sandwich in Trouble with Tribbles

I think the blocks were some alien fancy food they ate for diplomatic events.  They ate the food from thier home planets at other times.

They never actually ATE the colored blocks. Just stared at them a lot.

I had enver actually considered the blocks to be some alien food. That actually sounds the most plausable.

Maybe it's like the old sailing ships - they'd set off to sea with plenty of fresh food aboard, but once it was eaten/had gone rotten they were back to stale bread and ship's biscuit until they hit port again...

so maybe they started with sandwiches and chicken soup, then had to put up with coloured blocks until they made a planet/starbase with something more tasty

btw i wonder if it ever occured to them to try eaating tribbles? Roast tribble anyone?
